The arrondissement of Villefranche-de-Rouergue is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Aveyron département in the Occitanie region. Its capital, and subprfecture of the department, is the city of Villefranche-de-Rouergue.

When the arrondissements were created on 17 February 1800, Villefranche-de-Rouergue was one of them in the Aveyron department.[1]

Geography[change | change source]

It is the most western of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,293.4 km2 (499 sq mi), the smallest in area of the department. It is also the arrondissement with fewest people living there, with 63,808 inhabitants and a population density of 49.3 inhabitants/km².[2]

The arrondissement is bordered to the north by the Cantal (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) department, to the east by the arrondissement of Rodez, to the south by the Tarn (Occitanie) department and to the west by the Tarn-et-Garonne (Occitanie) and the Lot (Occitanie) departments.

After the reorganisation of the cantons in France,[3] cantons are not subdivisions of the arrondissements so they could have communes that belong to different arrondissements.
