Atlas is a Titan in Greek mythology. He is the son of Iapetos. With the Oceanid Pleione his children are the Pleiades.
After the war against the Olympians he was punished to hold the heaven on the west side of the world. Later, mostly in modern times, he is shown holding the whole world on his shoulders. He was responsible for holding the world on his shoulders as a punishment from Zeus, for rebelling against the gods.He met Heracles who asked him to get him golden apples for him. Atlas agreed and was free from the weight of the sky. But heracles tricked him into holding it again. Then he met Persus who asked for food and Atlas said no he could not help. Persus was furious and showed Atlas Medusas head that he had taken after killing her. Atlas then became a mountain called Mount Atlas.
