Atomic mass (not to be confused with atomic weight) is a term for the mass of a single atom of a chemical element. It includes the weights of the 3 subatomic particles that make up an atom: protons, electrons, and neutrons.

Because the electron is so light, the atomic mass is frequently expressed as the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom. So for example Carbon-14 has 14 particles that are either protons or neutrons and the mass can be worked out from their charge
