The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains' (also called the Battle of Chalons-sur-Marne or Battle of Chalons) was a battle in 451 AD. It happened in northwest Gaul (nowadays France) between Attila the Hun's armies and Roman legions and Visigoth soldiers commanded by Flavius Aetius and Theodoric I. Atilla's armies consisted mainly of horsemen, and it was mainly the extended use of cavalry that defeated him. The battle ended as a stalemate- and thus a victory for the west, the Huns having maintained too many losses to continue their attack. The battle of the Catalaunian Plains had crushed Attila's dreams of marrying the emperor's sister, Honoria.[source?]
