Bridge to Terabithia is about two children who create a fictional kingdom in a forest. The two main characters are Leslie Burke and Jess Aarons.[1]
The author thought of writing this book after her son David L. Paterson's friend Lisa Hill died from being struck by lightning in 1974.

In 1978, the book won the Newbery Medal.[2]
The work was also awarded an ALA Notable Children's Book, which is given to the best children's books of the year.
