Commedia dell' arte is a form of comedy. It was first done in theatres in Italy. It was done with a standard set of characters (like a doctor, or a priest). Usually it was played in the open, and free to watch. Usually, the players followed no script. it was popular between the 16th and 18th century. Some of the characters used masks. There are stock commedia dell'arte characters though their relations to the other characters can be changed .
