CANADIAN ARMOUR PASSING THROUGH ORTONA (underlined); The sketches from which this canvas was painted were made under uncomfortable conditions in ORTONA on; 23 Jan 44. It shows Shermans of the "Calgaries"; 14 C.A.R. passing through the PIAZZA PLEBISCITO in; ORTONA on their way into action on the coastal sector; The demolished houses in this painting illustrate the; German tactics of methodically blowing buildings into; the streets. The barriers thus formed provided covered; approaches to exposed positions.
