Deutsch: „Der in Schwarz und Gold gespaltene Schild zeigt vorn einen goldenen nach links stehenden gold gekrönten und rot gezungten Löwen von sieben silbernen gemeinen Kreuzen begleitet, hinten drei rote Sparren. Auf dem goldgekrönten Spangenhelm liegt eine rot-goldene Helmdecke auf und als Kleinod ein wachsender flügelschlagender rotschnäbliger und ebenso gezungter silberner Schwan.“

English: “Per pale: the first Sable a crowned lion couter-rampant Or langued Gules accompanied by seven crosslets Argent and the second Or three chevrons Gules. The shield is crested by a swan Argent beaked and langued Gules issuant from a helmet crowned Or and mantled Gules and Or.”

Object history

Hanau erhielt 1303 Stadtrechte. Das älteste bekannte Stadtsiegel von 1354 zeigt den Löwen und die Sparren der Herren (seit 1429 Grafen) von Hanau. 1538 kamen zum Wappen die kleinen Kreuze hinzu. Die heutige Form des Wappens folgt einem Vorschlag des Heraldikers Adolf Matthias Hildebrandt für die Stadt Hanau aus dem Jahre 1905.
