Он был инициатором ожесточенного и длительного, но в итоге неудачного восстания против английского господства в Уэльсе. Шекспир описал его в пьесе «Генрих IV» как дикого и странного человека, обуреваемого эмоциями и влекомого магией. В Уэльсе считается национальным героем наряду с королем Артуром.
