Grasshoppers are the suborder Caelifera, including locusts. There are 11,000 species, of which 10,000 are in the family Acrididae.
A grasshopper is an herbivorous insect which feeds on plants, including crop plants. Grasshoppers which form large swarms are called locusts. They are part of the order of Orthoptera. Some people eat grasshoppers.
