Hot air balloon is an old invention but since some years, it became really popular. Now, there are hot air balloon festivals. In Quebec, there are three festivals.
Festivals[change | edit source]
Festivent Ville de Levis is the oldest festival but there are too the International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival. During these events, they fly in the morning and in the evening if the conditions allow it. People can enjoy a balloon flight if they pay. Also, there are many activities. Sometimes, the balloons are lighted like the night glows.
There, we can see different shapes of balloons. Habitually, they are kind of round but they may have forms.
The history of the hot air balloons[change | edit source]
Some scientists knew about the fact that heated air is lighter than cold air, but the Montgolfier brothers created the first air balloon. On June 4, 1783, they launched their balloon to demonstrate their discovery. On September 19, 1783, they showed their invention in front of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the French court in Paris. The passengers were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. They flew till 480 meters. The first rise with humans was on October 19, 1783. The balloon was attached by a rope. Pilâtre de Rozier had a balloon rise on November 21, 1783. This rise was recognized for the official first flight. It’s the birth of hot air ballooning.
How a hot air balloon works[change | edit source]
In the air, there are many molecules. When it’s cold, these molecules are closer but when it’s hot, they move away. So, in the same space, there are fewer molecules in hot air. In conclusion, heated air is lighter than cold air. This system rise up the balloon. We need to reheat the molecules in the envelope thanks to the burner and the balloon will fly.
The different parts of the hot air balloon[change | edit source]
The basket[change | edit source]
The basket is the part of the balloon where the passengers and the pilot stand.Usually, it is made of wicker. There are different shapes of baskets. They can be square, rectangle and even triangular. Also, it exist many sizes. It can have enough places until 36 people. It depends the size of the balloon.
The burner[change | edit source]
The burner thanks to the propane produces flames under the envelope. It will create heated air in the balloon. This system allows the rise.
The envelope[change | edit source]
The envelope is the big fabric usually made of nylon.
