John Philip Holland

John Philip Holland (Irish: Seán Pilib Ó hUallacháin / Ó Maolchalann) (29 February 1840 – 12 August 1914[1]) was an Irish-American engineer. He developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy. He also created the first Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1.

He is often known as the father of the modern submarine for his designs.

Holland died on 12 August 1914 in Newark, New Jersey, aged 74.
