Joseph Smith, Jr. was born on December 23rd, 1805 in Sharon, Vermont. When he was 14 years old he went into the forest to pray. He said that when he was praying, he saw God and Jesus Christ come to him and speak to him. He had many wives. He believed that the garden of Eden was in Missouri. There were many people who did not believe his story. In 1844, a group of mob killed him in Illinois.

According to Joseph's own story, when he was 17 years old he was visited by an angel named Moroni who told him about a book written upon Golden Plates. A few years later Joseph says that he recieved those plates and translated them into the book that today is call The Book of Mormon.

On April 6, 1830, he started the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is often called the Mormon Church.
