I do not have a copy of the book, so it is hard to prove plagiarism. However none of it is referenced, so I will delete the section. --Peterdownunder (talk) 02:11, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I do have a copy of this book (somewhere). When I have the time, I'll try and rewrite it and reference it, and add more references. Some of the material on this article is not relevant anyway - it is general information about warfare in the First World War - and it should really be moved to Trench warfare, which is undeveloped anyway. Thank you very much for your help and time, Peter, and you did a great job cleaning the article up. --DJDunsie (talk) 13:43, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Battle of the Somme started July 1st, 1916. The battle took place north of the River Somme. This area was between the cities of Arras and Albert. The Battle of the Somme ended on November 18th, 1916. The French and British armies start to attack Germany. Germany was attacking a city named Verdun. The French needed rest from this attack. France and Briton attacked the Germans at the River Somme. They did this to take away Germany’s mind from Verdun. One goal of the battle was to take away a little bit from Germany. The power and goods of Germany will be smaller. This will be a good thing for France and Briton. The field of the Somme was not safe. The field had many bad things. Airplanes were sent before the soldiers. The airplanes tried to take away barbed wire on the fields. Barbed wire is thick wire with spikes on it. Airplanes tried to ruin the enemy’s trenches. Trenches are like level tunnels. Trenches would have the top cut off. Heavy artillery also attacked the trenches. Artillery looks like a cannon. Artillery is much more powerful than a cannon. Fighting in the trenches started. People soon saw the pain of war in the trenches. Many people died from poor conditions in the trenches. Other soldiers died from poor battle plans. On November 18th, 1916, the Germanic fort (a defense building) was captured. The fort was called Beaumont Hamel. The snow started to fall. This heavy snow made getting goods hard. The soldiers had to leave the fort. Many lives were lost in this war. It was traded for a small bit of land. Many people felt that a generation had been lost from the war. A generation is a group of people born and alive at the same time.
