Quick deletion[change source]

An editor has asked for this article to be quickly deleted as advertising/spam. The author of the article so far responded: I believe that we should have zoo articles on this Wikipedia, especially since articles is apparently "all Wikipedia cares about" (roll eyes referring to DonLammers). Anyways I was also told I could edit here from user: Moonriddengirl on Wikipedia. I also read the policy, and this is not saying good nor bad things about this place, they are facts and not merely opinions.

I have disallowed the QD, as I think the article has been improved. Needs a good intro however. If anyone is unhappy with this decision, then it should be brought up on Wikipedia:Requests for deletion.--Peterdownunder (talk) 02:56, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate this very much. I am looking for my references right now. Since there are some missing animals to the website, I was wondering if I could add them myself? Moebelle6 (talk) 04:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You mean add information about them based on your personal knowledge? That would be considered "original research" and would be discouraged. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:46, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, actual stuff I learned from the thing that is called the "Internet".Moebelle6 (talk) 04:57, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

:) As long as you give the sources, it should be fine. Preferably, they should not be primary sources, like the zoo's own web site. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:03, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gotchya ;. I do know other sources that is not the zoo's own website, especially since it gives little info about the exhibits and animals. The problem is, is that I know so much about it that I can't even find a source for it :D! I wrote a 30 page research paper on it and it only had to be 3 pages (just putting that out there). I also took over 500 pictures of the zoo this summer. Moebelle6 (talk) 05:04, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. You just reminded me -- I just checked and Wikimedia Commons has a category for this zoo. I'm going to add the Commons tag to the article so people can go look at them. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:19, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
30 pages? All I remember about that zoo was that in the mid-80s there were signs all over that big rock cluster in the (then new) elephant enclosure (the inside part where the visitors go that was all kinds of dark if you had just spent the day outside) telling people not to climb on the rocks.. They weren't there the first time I went, and after the zoo had to pay my medical bills for the "incident", that thing was plastered with them.. --Creol(talk) 05:21, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cool idea. Thanks for helping with this! I just finished. Now I might add a Zoo Babies section in the future and no where to get all my resources (implying that it is late where I am and I am tired). I also will now add pictures. Do you mind helping me properly tag them?Moebelle6 (talk) 05:24, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'd be glad to help. What exactly do you want help with? --Auntof6 (talk) 05:26, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Respond to Creol: Wow, don't really remember it being bad. The zoo is now 3rd top rated in the country and not just for the care of their animals but for the conservation efforts. Especially with the first AI bred Pallas' cats and Indian rhinos. Also the zoo is now working on doing the same for the clouded leopard, aye-aye, the critically endangered Sumatran rhino. It is a wonderful place!:). And I am thrilled to go the the "Greenest Zoo in America" twice a week in the summer.

To Auntof6: I would just like help with properly keeping my photos in the article without them being deleted like they have in the past.Moebelle6 (talk) 05:30, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, they liked the idea of a giant rock mound in the center of the display (to be honest, it did provide a nice atmospheric touch) but didn't take into account the fact it was essentially a giant rock playground in the eyes of children.. we raced to the top, I happen to hit an empty pool (it was that early in the construction, they had not got the water up yet), woke up outside (knocked out cold) waiting for an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. Sometimes its hard to see the flaws in construction plans till a 12 yr old face plants against a rock wall. --Creol(talk) 05:45, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Have you been there since? Moebelle6 (talk) 05:50, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding pictures[change source]

OK, what were the reasons in the past that you had photos deleted? --Auntof6 (talk) 05:32, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well I saw pictures on the Columbus Zoo page that were very well "tagged", as in saying you owe this photo. I did the exact same thing that user did but substituted in my own info but my pictures were still eventually deleted. I still don't know what I did wrong. Moebelle6 (talk) 05:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay I have written out the proper structure to get a photo uploaded but it now says that I don't have permission to do so and I have to be a "confirmed user." Moebelle6 (talk) 05:40, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think I could email you some of my pictures that I would like on the page? Moebelle6 (talk) 07:51, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the eagle owl. http://photos.zoochat.com/large/eurasian_eagle_owl-2-172378.jpg

Well, I don't share my email here. First, in case it wasn't clear, you would upload photos to Wikimedia Commons, not here, and not on English Wikipedia. Second, I have a few questions:
  • Where did you get the message about being a confirmed user -- on Wikimedia Commons, or on Wikipedia? I think all it takes to be a confirmed user is to have an account that's a certain number of days old, and/or to have made a certain number of edits. You don't have to be in a hurry here!
  • Have you logged into Commons before?
  • By "Columbus Zoo page", do you mean their website, or a Wikipedia article, or what?
Until you can it that worked out, you could use this picture that's already on Commons. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:16, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was the article. Thanks. I'll just try to upload my own photo.Moebelle6 (talk) 11:44, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is what it says. http://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&wpDestFile=Eurasian_eagle_owl-2.jpg

By the way the entrance picture is old. I have a link to a picture I took of the new one.Moebelle6 (talk) 12:58, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You need to upload it on Wikimedia Commons. You cannot upload images here. Osiris (talk) 13:00, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, cool thanks. I see that you moved that picture from Media to here. Do you mind giving me a tutorial of to do that? I want to use the Media eagle owl photo. Sorry that I am bothering you. Moebelle6 (talk) 13:08, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The upload wizard at commons is quite easy to follow the steps. The main issue that you need to work out beforehand is whether you have the permission to use the photos. Are they your own photos? If not, what license were they published under? If you don't know, tell me where you're getting the images from, and I might be able to tell you. Osiris (talk) 13:16, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

comments, various[change source]

I could scarcely believe my eyes. So much of the prose read like the zoo's PR output. As the flag says, the sources lack independent expert critiques. As a side-comment, the article ran to 55KB, while the En wki article was about 15KB. That has to be some kind of record... Macdonald-ross (talk) 12:58, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I see that most likely there had been a big copy/paste from the zoo website. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:40, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And En wiki's version had been up to 75KB before they got a grip. Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:13, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
