The page says: "One of the greatest achievements of the GDR is today still known as the high-powered automobile "Trabi"." Is it so? What about other achievements? --Bhadani 12:52, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the car is called 'Trabant' but also known as 'Trabi' 213.168.89.114

"German: Ostdeutschland"[change source]

The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was commonly called East Germany in English, but it was not commonly called Ostdeutschland in German. If no one objects, I will change that soon, unless someone else does it before me. --Frans Fowler (talk) 21:00, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am completely with you on this one; note however: Before 1945, "East Germany" was anything east of the River Elbe. Even though the official use was to use Ostdeurschland for the DDR/GDR, no one did so (the term was stigmatized). So how do we tell the non-German speakers? --Eptalon (talk) 23:03, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How about:
The German Democratic Republic (GDR) (German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR)), commonly called East Germany, was founded on October 7, 1949, after World War II. It was formed from part of the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, including part of the city of Berlin. It is no longer a nation by itself since the two parts of Germany, East Germany and West Germany, joined together in 1990. Before 1945, "East Germany" (German: Ostdeutschland) just meant the parts of Germany that were east of the River Elbe.
It might be good to delink October 7, 1949; I don't know the rule on Simple.wikipedia
