What some people think[change source]

I cannot be bothered with the sort of twaddle that starts a statement of fact with "Some people think" or "possibly the most famous".

OK! It's hard question time!

  • Who is the iconic blonde actress of the 1950s screen ? Aaaah.... could it possibly be Marilyn Monroe?
  • What is the name of the most famous church in Rome? Hard one! ...... "Some people think" it's St Peter's Basilica!
  • Who is the most famous British Pop Group of all time.... is it the BGs? No, "some people say" it's the Beatles.

These silly questions are to make a serious point.

If the fact of a person or an object's fame goes without question, then it puts that person or that object/artwork in the class of "icon". There is no question that the Eiffel Tower is the icon of Paris, that the Statue of Liberty is the most famous statue in New York or that Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is the most famous painted ceiling in the world.

The fame of the person or object needs stating because it is an essential part of the identity of the object. "Ginevera di Benci" is a portrait by Leonardo. The "Mona Lisa" is the most famous portrait in the world. That is a major distinction between the two works. Similarly, no other drawing has the fame of Leonardo's "Vitruvian Man". While not everyone knows its name, the drawing is known to anyone with a reasonable education, including the majority of older children.
