Title of article[change source]

Content split[change source]

If you compare this article to en:Chữ nôm, you can see that this is an extensively revised version. Among other things, I split the material. Content on computer encoding is in Sino-Vietnamese characters. Many of the characters that the Han-Nom Institute has proposed for encoding are not characters that you can find in a Nôm dictionary. So I think it would be confusing to discuss them here. The full set of 20,000 characters is referred to as the "Hán Nôm Ideographs." The Nôm Ideographs are a subset. Hán Nôm translates as "Sino-Vietnamese character," or at least that's how I am translating it. On the language template, "Han Nom" is used as a descriptor. This allows Sino-Vietnamese characters to be added to articles without breaking up the running text. To ordinary Vietnamese, these are Chinese characters (chữ Hán). In Vietnamese, a Chinese character gets a Han-Viet reading. In English, a Chinese character gets a pinyin reading. If a Nôm or Han-Viet reading is applied, it means the character is not being treated as Chinese. Hence the need to describe it with terminology like "Sino-Vietnamese" or "Han-Nom".
