Could someone with a maths background rewrite this?
Phrases like "polynomial number of steps" are nonsense to most English speakers. I assume that phrasing has some kind of meaning in mathematics circles, but the words are meaningless outside those circle. You may as well write "banana number of steps". Banana isn't a number. Neither is polynomial. The rest of us can only take it on faith that the sentence has meaning.
