Male newts have an enlarged cloaca (digestive, urinary, and reproductive tract). Also, newts are capable of regenerating (growing back) limbs and organs. Some research is being developed using newts which could be conducive to (cause, contribute, or be responsible for) treating persons with organ damage such as from heart attacks, since the organs of mammals (including humans) don't repair themselves completely and scar over instead. Newts in captivity are susceptible to (likely to be hurt or affected by) certain diseases (Kidney failure, fungal or bacterial infections, parasites, gas bubble disease) or symptoms (Bloat, patches on skin, wounds, lack of energy, not eating) if the newt isn't cared for properly and the water isn't changed or the water has chlorine or other chemicals in it. Newts drink by absorbing water through their skin. Newts have very porous skin, which means newt skin has many small spaces or openings called pores, which absorb liquids.
