I would like to delete the phrase "especially after death" from the first sentence. Postmortem pathology actually comprises a minority of the work done in this field. In my own experience, had 239 autopsy cases in 2011; we had almost 5 times as many hematopathology cases, and more than 10 times as many surgical pathology cases. On top of that are neuropath, cytopath, renal path - you get the picture. Pathology is the practice of determining what's wrong with the patient *before* death, and assisting the clinician in determining the best course of treatment to *prevent* death.
