Quadratic function or quadratic equation?[change source]

Which one is it? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 07:56, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is this article too simple?[change source]

Okay, I know that this is “Simple English Wikipedia,” but I think we can all agree that simple is not the same thing as wrong. The very first sentence states that “A quadratic equation is an equation in the form of ,” but is not an equation, it’s an expression. (An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal.) Candidates for a better way to phrase the opening sentence might include:

  1. A quadratic equation is an equation of the form , where a is not equal to zero.
  2. A quadratic equation is an equation that can be written in the form , where a is not equal to zero.

I know I might make some people mad but I really feel this can be said in a simple way. It may even be possible to explain why a is not zero in the case of the quadratic equation and why it cannot be zero in the case of the quadratic formula. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ciggol (talkcontribs)

Well, if you can find out an idea to make it simple, understandable, and right, by all means go ahead. :) I on my behalf can't exactly understand what you've just explained up here ^, but I don't see any wrong in your changing it in the right way you think it should be. If it's wrong, you can always undo it. Belle tête-à-tête 01:02, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I just made the change I suggested in first list element, but in retrospect maybe I should have just left things the way they were. Now it is an equation, a quadratic equation, but the sentence is still not exactly correct and it may be unnecessarily confusing. Unless there are any objections I think I will leave it the way it is for now, but I would not be offended if/when someone wants to change it back :)
