The paragraph about "scientific explanation" needs to be updated -

  • Discourse around science and musical affect is contentious and not universally-accepted fact.

Name theory[change source]

When I was studying early music at uni, I can remember being told a story about the name. The story claimed that there was some sort of weakness in the church building at Picardie. The organist was worried that playing a loud and sustained minor chord at the end of piece of music would bring the church crashing down. So to avoid disaster he always played a major chord.
