Template:IPA-all
Several templates can be used to show how a word should be pronounced (said) using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In order to use them, you need to know how the IPA works.
| Template | Description | Example | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic template | |||
| {{IPA}} | This template uses a font that allows special IPA symbols to display correctly. | {{IPA|prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən}} | prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən |
| General pronunciations of English words | |||
| {{IPA-en}} | Use this template to display a generally-accepted pronunciation of an English word, rather than a regional pronunciation that is usually found only in one or more places. The template links to "Help:Pronunciation" which has a chart showing IPA symbols that are relevant to English. | {{IPA-en|prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən}} | how to say: /prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən/ |
| {{Pron-en}} | This template is similar to {{IPA-en}}, but displays the word "pronounced" instead of "IPA". | {{pron-en|prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən}} | pronounced /prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən/ |
| Foreign words, regional pronunciations of English words, English dialects | |||
| {{IPA-all}} | Use this template for foreign words that are not yet considered as part of English, regional pronunciations of English words, and non-standard English dialects. The template links to "Help:IPA", which has a more complete chart of IPA symbols. | {{IPA-all|ˈstʀazbuʀ}} | IPA: [ˈstʀazbuʀ] |
| {{Pronounced}} | This template is similar to {{IPA-all}}, but displays the word "pronounced" instead of "IPA". | {{pronounced|ˈstʀazbuʀ}} | pronounced [ˈstʀazbuʀ] |
| With audio file | |||
| {{Audio-IPA}} | This template allows an audio file showing how a word is pronounced to be linked to.
(For a template that does not include IPA symbols, use {{Audio}}.) |
{{audio-IPA|sv-åka.ogg|[ˈoːka]}} | [ˈoːka] |
Respelled pronunciation [change]
The IPA can show the sounds in a word very accurately, but is not easy to understand as it uses many special symbols. Another way of showing how to pronounce a word is to use a respelling method. This method spells words using a simpler system, which can be found at "Help:Pronunciation respelling key". The method is easier to understand because it does not use any special symbols except the schwa ("ə"), which represents the "uh" sound.
The template {{Respelled}} can be used to display respelled pronunciations.
It can be helpful to show how a word should be pronounced with both the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and respelled pronunciation, as shown in the example below:
| Example | Result |
|---|---|
| '''Strasbourg''' ({{pronounced|ˈstʀazbuʀ}}, {{respelled|<small>STRAZ</small>-bur}}), is a [[city]] in the east of [[France]]. |
Strasbourg (pronounced [ˈstʀazbuʀ], STRAZ-bur), is a city in the east of France. |
