WORLD WAR II

From September 1939 to August 1945 Britain fought in World War II. The fighting took place all over the world, on land, at sea and in the air. After almost six years Allies (Britain and France with their empires, Russia and the USA) defeated the axis countries (Germany Italy and Japan). Although there were not any fighting in mainland Britain the war affected everyone's lives. Millions of people were killed and injured during this period of catastrophic unrest.

The injured men were lying in such a variety of positions, often with their limbs stuck out at queer angles in the plaster splints or sometimes slung on frames and hung with weights and pulleys; the light caught the glass flasks of blood which was still dripping slowly into the four bad cases.

        • CHILDREN IN THE WAR *******

In September 1939 the first Evacuation happed and the war began. All kinds of people were evacuated – pregnant mothers, mothers with small children, the sick and the elderly. Often, even the people in charge of groups of Evacuees did not know exactly where they were going. No wonder many of the children were excited – for them it was a journey. Many London children were evacuated to the countryside during WWII. It was tough living in London in the 1930s, not many children had been on holiday or even left the city. The children who were evacuated to the country side thought of it as being a great adventure. The child had an identification card and a gas mask and box. When they left for the countryside they were not allowed to take many other belongings with them. They were asked to take: two sets of underwear, spare shoes, socks or stockings, a warm coat, a sweater, handkerchiefs, and pyjamas or a night dress. They were also asked to take some basic toiletries: a soap, a towel, a toothbrush, toothpaste and a hairbrush or comb. Evacuees were normally older than baby Eileen. They were evacuated mostly by train. Others went by bus ,care or, occasionally ,by boat. The teachers who travelled with their classes acted as mothers and fathers. They comforted the children, made sure they had a enough to eat and drink
