I replied to your comment on Michelle Obama, just in case you didn't see. It's nice to see a Christian Wikipedian here! I hope you have a fun time here; keep up the lovely work you do! Sincerely, Classical Esther 03:27, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, Esther, Kansan is being especially cooperative as a newcomer. I would give him the "exceptional newcomer award", but I don't think I have the right to, so I'll just wait till somebody else will come over and give it to him. On this whole censorship thing

Does this Wikipedia have a user warning for censorship? If not, we should get one Purplebackpack89 (Notes Taken) (Locker) 17:21, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle does have "Removal of content or templates", but that has more of an implication of removing the entire page, so I would agree with you that it would be a good idea. I also think we should have a page such as WP:NOTCENSORED or whatever it is on the English Wikipedia. Kansan (talk) 17:23, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did as User:CopaceticThought. Kansan (talk) 17:52, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you find me a source for this statement, which was tagged as "Needs proving"

"While the economy was doing very well under these policies, it caused the rich to be richer and the poor to be poorer"

It's in the Boom and Bust section. Thanks. Also, which history texts do you use? Purplebackpack89 15:42, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the classroom, I use Holt's US History and World History Human Legacy. I never cite them on here, though; I tend to use online sources or books I just happen to have sitting around at home.
It might be difficult to find a reliable source to say that the rich got richer as the poor got poorer during that time; however, it would probably not be hard to find one to say that the gap between the two grew by a lot. Kansan (talk) 15:51, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stub Cup notice

Stub Cup
Hi and thanks for taking part in the Stub Cup! Here are a few things you need to know before we start:
  • The Cup starts on May 1st 00:00 UTC and ends on June 30th 23:59 UTC.
  • The stubs you expand must have been created before May 1st 00:00 UTC.

The scoring system works as follows:

  • If you get a stub to a Regular Article, you will get 1 point.
    • For an article of 1500 to 2199 bytes of text you get 1 point.
    • From 2200 bytes of text and for every additional 700 bytes of text you get 1 extra point.
    • If the portion you add is unreferenced, you only get half the points it is worth.
  • If you get a stub promoted to Good Article status, you will get 25 extra points.
  • If you get a stub promoted to Very Good Article status, you will get 50 extra points.

It didn't cause an edit conflict because ultimately, there were no differences between the section you were editing and the time when you hit "edit". A whole bunch of people can be editing the same article at the same time, but as long as they're editing different sections, it won't cause an edit conflict. Kansan (talk) 02:32, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New editor

Im new to this Wiki. I have edited on the English wikipedia. i have a question about this article, Emmett Till. Is it true that the Simple English wikipedia is not censored? if so, i think this article needs to state the truth of this incident more clearly. I have tried to find policy or discussion here confirming whether this wiki EVER intentionally writes to children. Im not quite sure if it is censored or not. i think we should not censor here, but i want to be sure first. I am trying to write this question in simple english. How do you think i am doing?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:11, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Children are not our only target audience; a big part of our audience is also people for whom English is not a native language, and also adults with learning disabilities, among others. With that in mind, Simple is not censored, and I certainly think that the Emmitt Till article should accurately tell what happened. The article being in poor shape is a result of a lack of attention and not censorship. Kansan (talk) 04:17, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I had asked the questions to your RFA with the full intent of commenting, but, I'm in an area where my access to very, tentative, if I can say that. So I apoligize for the "questions and run". About Emily. It was probably my fault... she gets bored of shoulder-watching, so I taught her about writing articles and seWP and all...Sorry. (Oh, and btw, what did she do?) talk 06:01, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It really wasn't a problem. She repeatedly created an article that I assume was autobiographical, and I eventually salted the title so that it could not be recreated again. I explained why it was not notable on her IP talk page (which you can see), and why vanity pages aren't allowed, and she seemed disappointed. But it really wasn't a big deal at all, and it's not your fault at all for talking about Simple English Wikipedia. Tell her that I hope that she comes back and does some editing, er, changing. Kansan (talk) 06:04, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you. I'll let her know; I'm not sure she has much of an interest in contributing though. (And should that IP ever do something really stupid, feel free to block. 3000 kids use it and Wikipedia's the only site you don't need a special internet password for. Which explains this.) talk 06:49, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mistakenly used by minor for chatting

Greetings,

I just learned my daughter was in contact with you via the Internet. I didn't know wikipedia had a social networking aspect to it. While there was no particular problem with the conversation, it still is unwise to have minors talking with unfamiliar adults. She won't be doing it any more.

Thanks, Anthony

Irrational ~umbers

Hello, Kansan, I'm the one who moved the page Irrational ~umbers because of the capitalization on the N in numbers. I thought that this was the correct spelling, as it seems to fit Complex number TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 07:27, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Watching pages

I don't understand why messages about watching pages are different. It gets confusing. For example, clicking the watch button on some random article will bring about a notice just above the title of the article and under the tabs (sort of like an editnotice) that tells you that the page has been added to your watchlist. Other times it would bring up a different page instead to use the message, like this here. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 06:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hm...if I click your link, it's a different page, but if I go to the article (or any other page), I get an "edit notice". Griffinofwales (talk) 13:25, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if this is either on purpose or a bug... Do you have some village pump or link to mediawiki that I could use to report this? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 19:52, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The editnotice under the tabs comes up if you click the "watch" tab on an article. The separate page comes up if you click on a direct link to a watch page like http://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Town_crier&action=watch. This isn't a bug. This is just how it functions, 20:06, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Ummm... Well, both of them (editnotice and watch page) come up alternately between articles when I click on the watch tab (for example, Associativity directs me to a watch page, and Simple English Wikipedia has an "editnotice", but when I go back to unwatch Simple, the watch page comes up again.). Oh, and either way, it gets confusing, so I prefer if the web page simply chooses one over the other, and please sign your name next time. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 21:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can't get this to duplicate anywhere. Whenever I go to an article and click "watch" it does the "editnotice." I don't get the separate page like you say you're getting. Up until a few years ago, it was always a separate page, but it was sort of annoying to go to a separate page then have to come back. So, this is the way it functions, and I think it functions well. Either way (talk) 21:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's not how it functions for me, and it has been alternating between those two options for quite a while, so it gets kinda annoying. That's why I suggested providing me with some link to complain about this thing so that it can settle between one option or the other and not alternating between both (preferably staying with your option, the one about the editnotice, on all pages). TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 23:37, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd recommend posting on WP:Simple talk. This is like a village pump and is more likely to get results from the community at large. Kansan (talk) 23:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DisneyVandal

Hi, I got on to this following an edit by an IP sock of en:User:BambiFan101 at Welsh Wikipedia just now, where I'm an administrator. He's just edited List of Disney movies. I suggest you revert and block. This vandal is well known across Wikipedia (see here for his latest spree: [1]) and thrives on sowing confusion (and creating work for wikipedia admins!). Regards, Anatiomaros (talk) 22:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that his edit is correct. En does not have the movie on their list. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:51, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It quite possibly is in this case, but then again may not be. Believe me, this person is not to br trusted (see his history and his sock puppet categories at en). Anatiomaros (talk) 22:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A google search finds nothing reliable. BF has contributed productively to this wiki, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. We often deal with BF, and this is the general policy on him. Thanks for pointing it out. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:56, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Our experience is somewhat different and I know experienced admins on en who would disagree, but it's your wiki. Take care to check and double check everything, even if it appears innocuous. Valid edits are part of his pattern too - he even reverts his own vandalism (by another sock) sometimes!. Take care and good luck! Anatiomaros (talk) 23:00, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting

I just observed that you enjoy deleting pages.  Polymathsj Talk 23:42, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It has nothing to do with what you did; just a simple observation.  Polymathsj Talk 23:43, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The community elected me to be an administrator, and part of my job as an administrator is to delete pages that do not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. For example, that page was obviously something that somebody wrote about himself (his username gave it away.) Kansan (talk) 23:50, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still complex

I can see that you are ahead of me by noticing the edit to Latex by User:124.179.65.20. May I have your opinion please? I made an edit to Wikipedia:Disambiguation. Would you still consider it complex?  Polymathsj Talk 00:27, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, yes, I do think that your edit made the page more complex. Here, we try to use as many words from Basic English as possible, and "making", for instance, is easier than "creating", and "very" is easier than "extremely". I'd say, overall, the first version is preferable from a simplicity standpoint. However, I do applaud you for jumping right in and working to improve the site! Kansan (talk) 00:30, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.  Polymathsj Talk 00:35, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Plurals

I noticed you just made a redirect for Prisons to Prison. It was my understanding that the wiki software would do that automatically by placing the letter "s" after a link. For example, sound and sounds (sound and sounds) will both link to the Sound article. Is there a preferred method?--The Three Headed Knight (talk) 22:50, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

sounds will link to Sounds, and not Sound. sounds links to Sound. That's why. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:52, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template

Can you please inform me of the template name that you used on User talk:142.68.28.170? I can't find it on WP:TM  PolymathSJ Talk 18:36, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I actually used Twinkle, but the template was . For a caution, it's uw-vandalism2, a warning is uw-vandalism3, and a final warning is uw-vandalism4. Kansan (talk) 18:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Try en:WP:Template messages/User talk namespace for a list of all possible uws. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 20:26, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between these two? It seemed like they came from the same documentation on enWiki. If the only difference is that one allows more shortcuts than the other, then I think that they can be merged. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One is just a subpage of the Ombox template and the other is its own template. -DJSasso (talk) 21:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So we can merge them, right? What does it being a subpage matter? It seems to still work as though it were a template. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Subpage means that its code is part of the ombox template as a whole most likely. Changing anything on it could change how the Ombox template itself works. -DJSasso (talk) 21:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find the code, or anything like in the ombox template, even when viewing the page source. They seem to be able to complement each other if they were on the same page, while at the same time exist indepedently. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I admit I haven't looked closely at the code. Since it was probably taken from en, the best place to ask would probably be en since they too have both seperate. -DJSasso (talk) 21:46, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I found the difference. One embeds information into the ombox and the other is a right aligned version for pages that don't use the ombox.
  1. shortcut – right-aligned box.
  2. shortcut-l – left aligned box.
  3. policy shortcut – shortcut that also says "policy".
  4. – shortcut that embeds into message boxes.
-DJSasso (talk) 21:48, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, you mean like this? Ombox shortcut: [X [Y]]; Template:Shortcut: [X] [Y] -- where [brackets] represent a header like Template:policy, X represents a message, and [Y] represents the shortcut box. Let me know if this is wrong. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:57, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
en:Wikipedia:Editing policy uses . If you notice the shortcut box is inside the Ombox at the top of the page. shortcut is used on en:Wikipedia:Announcements and is on the right side of the page. shortcut-l puts it on the left side of the page. ANyways I will stop spamming Kansan. If you need more message me on my talk page. -DJSasso (talk) 22:03, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kgsbot

Thought I might point out to you, as I know a few newer admins are unaware. But we allow automatic approval of certain types of bots. In this case interwiki. You can see our local comment about it at the top of Wikipedia talk:Bots -DJSasso (talk) 12:03, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. Kansan (talk) 18:48, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can categories be moved by admins, as I had said on the Simple Talk page? Or must the individual pages containing said category be changed manually? If it was the latter case, could I have the flood flag for moving the category?

Also, does the new user violate the username policy for having bot at the end of the username? I'm still relatively new to the wiki and would really appreciate you taking the time to answer all these questions. Sincerely, :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 03:04, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moving the category and pages: Both, or at least the latter, need to be done. User:OpenBot will do it in under half an hour if there is consensus. sonia♫♪ 03:14, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry I didn't get to this earlier. I would probably find it best to allow OpenBot to take care of it (I'll try to mention something to Sonia if it's not done by tomorrow; I may be busy tomorrow so my online time might be limited.) As for the user, which user are you referring to? Users with names ending in "bot" generally must reflect a status as a bot, however, as Djsasso explained elsewhere on this talk page, established bots from elsewhere are treated with more leniency (which I did not know until he recently corrected me on this issue.) Kansan (talk) 05:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, SonofGobot? I wouldn't worry about that one. It doesn't seem to represent itself as a bot (it reminds me vaguely of Godot, as in the famous play.) Kansan (talk) 05:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, are you saying that I should just go ahead? I'm not sure that "...and related templates" is a good name for a category; "User warning templates" is fine on its own. Should there not be a discussion first? sonia♫♪ 06:23, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Pending discussion, since I'm not sure that it is myself. I'm sorry, very late night, and I'm about to head to bed. Kansan (talk) 06:25, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons

Hey Kansan, I have a quick question of the RevDelete reasons. For a RevDelete I did earlier I put "Hiding of blatant attack names" as the reason, I've since realized that that is under the "only for use by oversighters" section of the drop down box. I'm just wondering if I need to change the reason because I'm not an oversight. Thanks. Exert 02:53, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an oversighter either so I probably shouldn't definitively say for sure, but it might be a good idea for now until a consensus is reached. Kansan (talk) 03:15, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

The Teamwork Barnstar
For Kansan for his work as part of the "Did You Know" team. This small group of editors make suggestions, check the facts, offer improvements, and make sure there are always new DYK hooks to go onto the main page. Keep up the good work. Peterdownunder (talk) 12:13, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New articles in userspace

You can create articles, then tag them with draft. This produces a bar on top of the article stating that it is unfinished. This will negate the need to move the article from userspace to mainspace. Thanks, --Chemicalinterest (talk) 18:50, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's more for articles being written from scratch. I don't want unsimplified articles (especially with many broken templates) in mainspace until they are really ready to go. I'd much rather wait than put an article in mainspace both with a template message and that's unprepared. Kansan (talk) 18:52, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect John isner

Hi, just interested in policy (or more custom and practice actually) here... On Wikibooks we tend to delete "incorrect case" redirects like this one because the MediaWiki software handles it. That is, if you type (in this example) "john isner" or "John isner" or "John Isner" in the "Search" box you'll end up at the same article so redirects from all the different "cased" versions of a title aren't required. That's not true if the article title is "john Isner" (i.e., first word lower case, second word upper case) for some reason. Anyway, I stuck a QD on John isner after I moved it for this reason as I have a fetish for tidiness. I saw your comment that the redirect is reasonable, which is it, but it isn't really necessary. As you say, it's cheap and makes no difference if it stays there but I was just curious if leaving them behind after a page move to correct a "case" issue on the title is normal practice. If it is I won't worry about QDing them again... Thanks. QU TalkQu 21:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Flood Flag

I'm glad you offered me the flag before I kept on overwhelming the "New changes". I'll be sure to ask again before I go on a sprint of such similar changes. I'm all finished for now, so can you please turn it off? Thanks! Ted (talk) 05:01, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Admin's Barnstar

The Admin's Barnstar
Dear Kansan, thank you for being so quick, and what is far more important, so efficient as an administrator. :) I am always impressed by how thoughtfully and carefully you act, and your contributions prove that you are indeed one of the best Wikipedians I can think of, and a truly wise person. Thank you for all that you do here. Sincerely, —Clementina talk 06:20, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.

Thanks for you message. I'm pretty much new to Wikipedia (although I had an account on the English Wikipedia back in around 2007), but I'm pretty confident on wikiformatting seeing as I've done some stuff on wikia. Hope I can help ! Why? (talk) 18:28, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit to antimatter

It does not fundamentally change the meaning. EnWP says mixing antimatter and matter makes annihilation, which means they both disappear. It can give off energy (gamma rays) or other particles. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 20:36, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can learn science! It is so easy! It does get more complicated in certain areas, though. I am better at chemistry, though. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 00:34, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see you changed zinc. I made it even better, just in case you are interested. Keep on changing science related articles--you may develop a keen interest in them! --Chemicalinterest (talk) 01:40, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm mildly interested in a number of science subjects, such as astronomy, biology, and chemistry, it's just far from my area of specialty. Kansan (talk) 01:41, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Organizational Debate at History of the United States

Hey, there's an organizational debate going on at Talk:History of the United States regarding sectioning of Post-World War II content. Since you have contributed to the article, you might want to take a look at it Purplebackpack89 04:51, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Very well done! Kansan (talk) 13:13, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete the hook for sulfur? There was a hook for sulfuric acid before that (dyk that sulfuric acid turns sugar black?). That one had no support so I deleted it, just as BG7 was adding his comment that the two hooks looked similar. I have undid your edit. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 13:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Secondary note: I removed the sulfuric acid hook just as BG7 added the note that both of the hooks were similar. He later struck out his comment. I mentioned that I had removed the sulfuric acid hook because it did not have any support. You deleted the sulfur hook, not the sulfuric acid hook. I restored the sulfur hook with a pointy edit summary. Sorry for being so ambiguous. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 13:40, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- :You said that you were deleting the hook after BG7 said that we needed to wait another couple of queues, and didn't propose another hook (or suggest anything), so I interpreted that as withdrawing your hook. Kansan (talk) 13:41, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see the issue now. I apologize for the confusion. Kansan (talk) 13:43, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No prob! :) --Chemicalinterest (talk) 13:44, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it. I keep meaning to get back to it but I don't know when I would. I have it simplified up through the "Early use" section. Kansan (talk) 17:07, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cold War and Beyond sections

Hey, nobody's commented on the Cold War organizational change in several days and it appears the consensus is for returning to 1991 as the split between the last two sections, so would you be so kid as to make the necessary changes? Purplebackpack89 18:06, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look at it. Kansan (talk) 18:07, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree on 1991 being the end of the Cold War (does the 1989 date come from the Berlin Wall falling), but doesn't the header already say 1991? Kansan (talk) 18:11, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's a subsection. The section heading reads 1945-2000, and should be changed to 1945-1991. The 1991-2000 content should be moved into the next section, the 21st century content should be dropped down to a subsection, and a new title should be given to the 1991-2010 section. Purplebackpack89 18:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Neither the subsection nor the section heading read 2000 anywhere, so I'm a little confused on that count; however, feel free to make the changes. Kansan (talk) 19:07, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Like what I did? Anyway, participate in the simplicity and images discussions Purplebackpack89 23:18, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revision deletion

Hey Kansan. I'm not sure that this warranted Revision Delete, as it was non-identifying vandalism. We typically only hide the edits when there is a full name in this context, not just a first name. I'm not going to ask you to undo it, but I wanted to point this out for future reference. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 22:17, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My reading of the new policy WP:Cyberbullying indicates that this sort of thing does need to get rev del'd (and in the discussion of the policy, it was discussed that even first name sort of vandalism of that nature) probably does need to go. Because of the likelihood of it being done within a classroom, I think that does fall within that policy. Kansan (talk) 22:20, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In particular, the definition of bullying on that page plus the phrase "Quickly hide all bullying edits" seems to indicate that rev del would have been acceptable, so I do stand by my action. Kansan (talk) 22:36, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Water-fueled car

I can explain. Water is a low-energy compound of hydrogen and oxygen. When electricity flows through it, it makes hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity is added as energy to the hydrogen and oxygen. When the hydrogen is burned in the oxygen, it releases heat energy and converts to water. So water cannot be a fuel just like the exhaust fumes of a car can't be used as fuel; the energy is already taken out from the water. Hope you understand. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 23:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Complex words subpage

Would you mind if I add some words to it? BTW, I added them already. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 23:54, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Query about Projects on Simple

Hi, new Simple editor User:IanP asked at my talk page about how to start a WikiProject (or whatever the equivalent is) on Simple. I think he intends it to be about Warriors (book series) and related subjects. Can you offer any advice? thanks --Demiurge1000 (talk) 08:11, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He seems to have made a start at User:IanP/WikiProject Warriors but had previously created it in Project space and it got moved [3] --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:33, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My advice for him right now would probably be not to worry as much about WikiProjects, because unlike on English, on Simple, we don't really have active WikiProjects. I've seen him make some great articles so far and I'd recommend he spend his time on those. Thanks for your help! Kansan (talk) 16:24, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since you had commented on the article, I wanted to tell you so that you could respond if you wanted to. I've informed the author, Chuck, on his talk page and others who commented also. If I've gone to far, please let me know--I'd appreciate it. I'm not quite sure where the line between "bold" and "breaking things" might be. If you have feedback, I'll respect that. I have only made edits in the normal English Wikipedia. I am requesting Adminship on the Simple English Wikipedia because the articles on the English Wikipedia are difficult to understand, because I am young.

Nationality edit wars

We're collecting some edit wars over nationality of people who lived part of their life under the Soviet Union. Paul Keres and Kazimir Malevich are examples. Both have collected single-issue lunatics er, I mean, misguided contributors who wish to rewrite history. My inclination is that if a person has lived his life in two or more different countries, they should both be recognized in the article.
Since, obviously, this sort of thing must have happened thousands of times, do we have a useful summary to guide editors? I can't quite find one. Macdonald-ross (talk) 17:41, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm coming to the conclusion that tag teams are operating in favour of Estonia and Ukraine respectively. It's too much of a coincidence when two or three unknown users land on a page within days, after a page has been quiet for ages. See what you think. We're always looking for new articles because we have far fewer than on English (and to improve those existing; some articles on important subjects are in surprisingly bad shape or very short). That and keeping an eye on recent changes to spot vandalism are the best ways anybody can help. Kansan (talk) 19:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sysop

I know trust is better than edit count, but what is an edit count to shoot for to become an admin? Just wondering... Cheers... Mìthrandir (talk) 14:54, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't say there's an edit count in particular, especially because edit counts are misleading. For example, if I made ten small changes to my userspace, it would count as ten edits more than if I wrote a new six paragraph article. More important is just consistently editing various aspects of the project for a long period of time. I might also add that being an admin is not as big of a deal as some people think; it just really means you have access to a few more tools and doesn't mean that you're less important or will be taken less seriously. In the past, people who go out of their way to become an admin actually have had a harder time getting it. It's usually not a goal, it's just something that happens. Hope this helps. Kansan (talk) 15:01, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thanks for the info... :) Since I have been on the English Wikipedia for a couple years I have begun to grasp that consept. My goal here is not to become an admin... there is so much work to be done; formatting articles, writing tons of new articles, working on backlogs... I have already jumped into this work... this is my view of my adminship here; I will continue to edit normally and only apply for adminship when it is actually neccessary and will help me with my work. There is so much work that can be here without being a sysop, so I don't see myself applying in the near future... Cheers. Mìthrandir (talk) 15:13, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tito

Do you know that there are some fanatic supporters of dictator Tito, like Either way, who erase all references showing his many bloody crimes?. They are all related to a group of Yugoslavian user in en.wikipedia, who promote only POVs pro-Tito and -shamefully- erase everything against him. Please, read here (References) to have an idea of the crimes of Tito. We need a simple wikipedia with NPOV and not showing only the few achievements of Tito: can you imagine (for example) the "Hitler" article without references to the Holocaust, and only showing the few achievements Hitler did? Regards. Tom.

I put two links on the article of Daniel Nathans for the colleges he attended, Washington University and the University of Delaware, but I didn't realize that the link had to be to Washington University in St. Louis.... is it okay if I make a redirect, because I don't think there are any other Washington Universities to be confused with... Thanks for your speedy response on the Admin Noticeboard. Since my block on the en Wiki (I have reformed, I assure you), I have really realized that users don't need four warnings before being blocked. If they ignore you after the first or second warning, then I believe the user should be blocked, not indef, but a reasonable amount of time, like a couple days. If that doesn't wake the user up and they continue to disruptively edit, then they should be blocked for a longer period of time. I'll report any further incidents to vandalism in progress... Cheers. Hey Kansan. Re: Infant Attachment

I had hoped to help edit the regular WP article on Attachment theory. (I read the primary text--Bowlby's Attachment--about 20 years ago and have used it repeatedly. But I found there are major disagreements at the present time between scientists and practitioners in the field, and major battles going on. (For example one mustn't use the term "mother"--it must be "primary attachment figure." (Go figure). There seemed to be no way to establish a relatively simple definition of attachment in infancy comprehensible for laypeople. So I wrote the article I just posted. (I first reviewed it with the senior faculty member here at this community college who did her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. U of Az. She okayed the statements on mammalian behavior although is unfamiliar with attachment theory specifically--attachment being more within the field of comparative psychology and ethology rather than biology). Frankly I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Margaret9mary (talk) 01:53, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no issue with the content itself (I only put the tag up because the vocabulary is a little too complex for our target audience, but that's easily fixable). If you have changes you want to make to the English Wikipedia (the "regular" one), you can always discuss them on that article's talk page ahead of time. You could also find people with similar interests that whom you could contact for help at their WikiProject Psychology. Kansan (talk) 02:06, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adding inappropiate words to spoil an article is vandalism. The "user" that wrote that topic in an article watched by you had vandalized the article, of course I was NOT commenting on the action(undoing) done by you, Kansan. Sorry. :-) Mrlink92 (talk) 17:18, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of chess grandmasters

Criteria for the list are at the top of the page: grade +2700 and any others who reached the final stages of a world championship. As a result of grade inflation there are now about 1,500 GMs, whereas in 1948 there were about 50. Most of the 1500 are of no interest whatsoever to anyone except their mothers and best friends! Robson is a long way from being a strong GM, but he may improve rapidly. I add biographies for any who reach the top twenty (the FIDE rating list is updated every two months). Hello! Thanks for the welcome message!

As an active member of the SWMT, I normally fight against vandalism on small wikis, and I am often on IRC in the related channel.

Well, I think it would be quit usefull to have rollback feature here, because this tool should make countervandalism easier and faster. As you can see, I have a lot of anti-vandalism experience as administrator on Portuguese Wikipedia (verify - contribs) and rollbacker on enwiki (verify - contribs), eswiki (verify - contribs) and eswikt (verify - contribs).

For what reason would we delete that unless more is added? And when you said it should be deleted unless more is added, what did you mean? And what kind of information should be added? The University of Northern Iowa class at 166.216.194.29 (talk) 04:49, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, general policy (per WP:CRYSTAL is that articles about future events should only be kept if it can be shown why they are important beyond just existing in the future (for example, there would be no point in putting up an article on "2020 American presidential election", even though we know it will happen. You mentioned that some scientists think it could be a very rough season; explaining why scientists think this would show why this season might be important. By the way, thank you for contributing. We always welcome help, especially from higher academic institutions. Kansan (talk) 05:03, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration

Hey there, since you wanted to collaborate in the team effort, can you please nominate one article you would like to work on so we can start? Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 16:04, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting portal templates

Thanks for deleting Template:Portal. There were four other templates included in that RFD, plus I expected all the subtemplates to be deleted as well. Do I need to make separate requests for those? Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:40, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I got them all, thanks. Kansan (talk) 04:03, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting the 4 others. Sorry to be a pest, but there are still 19 subtemplates from Template:Portal -- see list here. If it would help, I'd be glad to qd each of them to make it easier for you to navigate to them -- just let me know! --Auntof6 (talk) 04:34, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting or redirecting

Rather than deleting the article regarding 2016 Presidential Election, we students from UNI think that we should have the page redirected to a related page on Simple English Wikipedia until a certain time. Deleting isn't always the answer. If it violates WP:CRYSTAL, please let us know. The Univ of Northern Iowa school class at 166.216.194.26 (talk) 05:07, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Decomposition

I'm curious how the deletion of an article would mean that articles linking to it because they need to define unsimple terms or concepts would no long need to be linked? Since decomposition and decay are still unsimple, shouldn't they still need to be linked even if they are red links at the current time. 70.184.171.16 (talk) 08:02, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Passover

Hi, Kansan. Thanks for reverting the vandalism on Passover. Maybe it's time for a two-week semi-protect to cool things off? StevenJ81 (talk) 16:44, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 17:08, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Date headings on user talk pages

Hi, Kansan. I see you've been very busy dealing with vandals! When you create a user talk page to leave a warning, could I ask you to include a heading (such as "October 2013")? It would be much appreciated. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 05:27, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An important message about renaming users

Dear Kansan,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
