Hello, Tholly, and welcome to the Simple English Wikipedia!

You should begin by reading these pages:

If you want some ideas of which pages to work on, read Wikipedia:Requested articles or the list of wanted pages.

Remember to be bold and edit any pages you want! Any changes you make that are not perfect can be fixed later. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Simple talk. You should always sign your messages on Talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words.

Good luck and happy editing! --Andrew from NC (talk) 15:41, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you :) - tholly --Turnip-- 15:43, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia! When creating a new article, please be sure to place it in a category. If you do not know which category is best, please type {{uncat}} at the bottom of the page and someone else will find a good category. You may want to read Wikipedia:Categories to learn more about how to use the category feature. Please don't let this discourage you, as your contributions have been very good! --Andrew from NC (talk) 17:04, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks - On enwiki I don't usually create new articles so forgot about that! - tholly --Turnip-- 17:05, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ana

Hey Tholly, thanks for your support of Ana's article. If you get some time could you look at Daniela Hantuchova as well? I'm hoping her article is up to scratch too. Don't worry, I'm working on another article right now, completely different from female tennis players! Thanks again. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed you tend to like tennis players! I'll have a look. Thanks, - tholly --Turnip-- 17:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I responded to your concern about the both mum and dad being scientists - can you check it's okay with you? Thanks again for your time. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:06, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you archived quick!!! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:08, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I like keeping my talk page clear, and guessed that those comments wouldn't require further attention! - tholly --Turnip-- 20:09, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, cool! Well in your own time please leave your opinion at the VGA for Hantuchova, I'd very much appreciate it. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:17, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have time now, but when once I've looked at the references tomorrow I can give a support I think. - tholly --Turnip-- 20:21, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, no rush. Thanks for your time. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:37, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I keep saying I don't have time now, but as I'm still here I might as well start looking :), I won't finish today though. - tholly --Turnip-- 20:39, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<- Thanks for your help and thorough review! Ivanovic will be on the mainpage for the week after next, by the way! The Rambling Man (talk) 14:49, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look out for it! - tholly --Turnip-- 14:50, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, oops. I created both articles, and must have used both titles. Thanks -- America †alk 18:04, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No trouble. - tholly --Turnip-- 18:28, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar!

Barnstar Congratulations: You have been given a Barnstar!

For the hard work that you've done, I hearby award you this Barnstar! -- America †alk 18:30, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thank you! My aim is to have all the years in the 17th century done at some point. Many thanks, - tholly --Turnip-- 18:39, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Very good job lately! Cheers -- America †alk 18:41, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, - tholly --Turnip-- 18:42, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

design

Your user page design hurt my eyes, so I changed it to lighter colors. (#efe light green, #eff light blue, #eeefff light purple, and #ddefdd darkish green for the archive box). The talk page design looks strange now, and you may want to fix that. You might want to change the colors, but please stick to light colors. I am using a CRT monitor and desktop. --68.96.213.118 (talk) 00:06, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll have a play with it. - tholly --Turnip-- 06:10, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is that any better?, it is a lighter blue. - tholly --Turnip-- 06:15, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, try to use pastel/lighter colors (light blue #eeffff, light pink #ffd1dc, light brown #ffefde, #light purple fffeee, light green #eeffee). Yellow is quite annoying, but if you must, choose #fff8d7. The darker, more saturated colors make me dizzy and give me pain in the back of my eyes. What would you want the backgrounds changed to if you only had pastels to choose from? I like the color of the archive box for the main background, and then you could just use #eeffee or #f9f9f9 for the archive box. I think #eeefff or #eeffff would make a nice replacement for the blue background. 68.96.213.118 (talk) 15:21, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's still not quite the colour of the archive box, but it's lighter. Do you like it? (I will get this page sorted before I change the others or I will be changing loads each time). - tholly --Turnip-- 15:37, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It still needs to be lighter, but it is much better. However, User:American Eagle's talk page link is barely visible. You may want to choose a different color (like those mentioned above). Why not choose a pastel? 68.96.213.118 (talk) 17:24, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to make the color a little bit lighter. Hope that helps -- America †alk 17:44, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The blue is good (except for American Eagle's talkpage link), and the green needs to be much lighter. The archive box color would be good, and the archive box could be changed to #eeffee or #f9f9f9. AE and Razorflame, what about your signatures? 68.96.213.118 (talk) 21:22, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) This is no longer right. We don't all have to change our colors so you like them. If you want that, create an account and make your own userpage. Especially signatures, things can be faded or light. I don't mean to seem rude, but user's page and talk page are their's to design. Cheers -- America †alk 21:42, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You do seem rude, and you never did address the issue. But if you don't care about how signatures are displayed, please just change the rest of the user-space to these colors. In web design, it is not "what looks nice to you" that matters. 68.96.213.118 (talk) 23:15, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My userpage is now much lighter than it was, and I'll think I'll keep it like this for now. There is only a very little section of green around the edge so it doesn't matter too much. If you would like a completely different colour scheme, please log in and make your own userpage - it's really easy to create an account :). Also, if you don't like my userpage, you don't have to look at it (We are here primarily to build an encyclopaedia). Best wishes, - tholly --Turnip-- 08:06, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry for being rude. And I have now changed my talk page color to white. Cheers -- America †alk 04:39, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the IP was referring to your talk page link on your signature, which doesn't really show up on my new page background colour, but I'm not too fussed if your not. - tholly --Turnip-- 06:54, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work!

Nice work that you've given so far to this site! Keep up the good work! Cheers, Razorflame 17:46, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm going away on holiday quite a bit over the summer, but will be back fully in September, I hope! - tholly --Turnip-- 08:07, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

July/August Holidays

I am taking a semi-wikibreak for the summer, as in real life I will be on holiday for large parts of it. As a result, I may not respond swiftly to queries.

Jessica

Hi Tholly, I'll be moving Jessica to voting once Kournikova has closed. It's not looking good right now, I need at least four more supports in two days. Problem is no-one is voting or commenting, it's really frustrating. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:38, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to extend the voting period? There have been no opposes, just no one has looked at it yet. - tholly --Turnip-- 15:43, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. We're up to four now, at least, but it's still not enough. Oh well. We'll see. If the community are so apathetic that my efforts are a waste of time, I won't bother doing it again. Shame really. Ho hum! The Rambling Man (talk) 15:52, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think people just don't know it's there, that's the problem - you got lots of support for the last articles. Also, this is what the rules say:
"an article must have a minimum of 6 named users participate in the vote and 80% (or higher) of the voters must support promotion"
Which means it could pass on 5 supports and 1 oppose. And yet if you get one more support (to make 5) it won't pass? Is this true? - tholly --Turnip-- 15:56, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How curious. You're right. Five supports alone won't swing it but five supports and one oppose (83% support) would. Weird. I may bring that up somewhere! The Rambling Man (talk) 15:59, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, something is definitely wrong here... I think it should be able to pass with only 5 supports - although not many people will have seen the article, it means that everyone who has is happy. Five supports and 1 oppose suggests an article that is not as good, especially on percentage terms - tholly --Turnip-- 16:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've brought it up at Wikipedia talk:Proposed very good articles although I doubt anyone will read it or comment on it! The Rambling Man (talk) 16:04, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Some one will notice it eventually. And if Kournikova only gets 5 supports, you can bring it up with whoever tries to close the PVGA (can only Bureaucrats do this or is it Admins too?) - tholly --Turnip-- 16:08, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's undefined as far as I can tell. I usually talk to Creol about it. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:09, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd noticed, that is why I asked. :) - tholly --Turnip-- 16:10, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alba is now available for voting! The Rambling Man (talk) 21:11, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! - tholly --Turnip-- 21:11, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Heads up

Thanks man, EOH was my regular wikipedia acount and i just copied my sig from there without changing it. EOH doesnt actually exist on wikipedia either. I had it changed to Ezekiel 7:19. Thanks for the heads up though! Best Regards.--Ezekiel †alk 16:34, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, just thought I'd bring it up! - tholly --Turnip-- 16:35, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Dang you are fast!--Ezekiel †alk 16:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
lol! :) - tholly --Turnip-- 16:37, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit.

I saw your edit on my mainspace. Nope i didn't get it from AE.(thought you would like to know)-- Running  talk , the founder the Wikiproject Anti-Vandalism 19:19, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I've been on holiday. Anyway yeah, I realised once I'd done it I meant Gwib, but you can't change a history summary. Was it from Gwib?
By the way, it's not your main space, the main space is where the articles are. It's your userspace or user namespace even. - tholly --Turnip-- 16:30, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for the userpage edit. Microchip 18:28, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No trouble, you noticed quickly! - tholly --Turnip-- 18:28, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Warner

I'll take a look now. But I will not allow Gwib to wreck every single one of these nominations through sheer ignorance. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:46, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's on for a pass at the moment (77.7%), even if there's another oppose it should pass (70%). I see you've put Alba back up. As long as you've done what Creol said it should pass now. - tholly --Turnip-- 17:17, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wanted pages

Hi Tholly. Good work on the MWP. The reason the list of police forces and postcodes is most wanted is because place infoboxes link to them and there are dozens of these infoboxes in simple Wikipedia. As for Warner, yes, good at the moment, but I don't want people to believe Gwib has a valid reason to oppose. Dangerous precedent. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:25, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, of course, that make sense. And I see. He doesn't seem to be changing his opinion although I think most people disagree. - tholly --Turnip-- 17:27, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

University Infoboxes

Hi, I see you added some infoboxes to a couple of articles, but your syntax wasn't quite right. They're more simple than their enwiki counterparts, if you're copying them across. I've fixed them, but there's an example of usage on at Template:Infobox University if ever need to add any others. Thanks. Hippopotamus (talk) 02:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that'll help. - tholly --Turnip-- 08:53, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of the Week

Hi, I was the one who deleted the translation of the week in the recent changes page. I deleted it because the translation is a red link, in other words, no translation! Shouldn't it be deleted? Minor Contributer (talk) 10:19, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. Eptalon put it on and he knows what he's doing. I think the idea is that someone translates it this week - that's why it gives links to other languages. you could check with him if you like. - tholly --Turnip-- 13:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish Football League

I noticed that you recently reverted some vandalism to this page. That's great, but please check the history for other edits from the same user, as the IP you reverted had made 3 edits in a row and you only reverted the last one - leaving some vandalism still on the page. I noticed as another IP has just reverted it. Sorry to moan, but I just thought I'd point this out for the future. I've done this before too - we all overlook things sometimes. :) - tholly --Turnip-- 18:04, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, I never noticed. Thanks for pointing it out :) ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) 20:27, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No trouble - tholly --Turnip-- 20:29, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

zOMG

Why would we never have articles on the Hebrew alphabet? Synergy 16:48, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, we might have articles on them one day, but seeing as we only have about 4 English equivilents of the 24 numbers or so, getting to Hebrew just yet seems unlikely, unless of course you want to create them, when I would be more than happy to put back in the red links. :) - tholly --Turnip-- 16:53, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Its tempting. :D I might do it tonight, my first day off since my vacation ended. No worries. :) Synergy 17:07, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have fun then! - tholly --Turnip-- 17:08, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A new signature and userpage design... lovely - tholly --Turnip-- 16:15, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, yes its pretty aint it? :) Doesn't show correctly in Opera though :( The lucida handwriting shows as an ordinary font... ah well, everyone else can see it probably :P Kennedy (talk) 19:23, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Signing

In Cassandra's RfA, you forgot to sign. Please do double check that you have signed on votes especially! - tholly --Turnip-- 09:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Old age? :P Kennedy (talk) 09:14, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It will come to us all :( I speak to a lot of older people in my job, and sometimes its quite scary. Indeed, you should consider yourself lucky! - tholly --Turnip-- 09:22, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(<-)Yes! By the way, you seem to have settled really well in the 1month you have been at simple.wiki ! I actually thought you were an admin! :P Kennedy (talk) 09:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, maybe one day, but I'll need to wait at least another two months yet. I've been on enwiki for about three months, but hardly edit there now. simplewiki is so much better! - tholly --Turnip-- 09:29, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! I take it you have been active on another wiki before? Because that is a very short time to be editing so well! If/When you decide to run, drop me a line, I would be more than willing to nom(/co-nom). Anyway, I'm neglecting my customers, better get back to work :P Regards, Kennedy (talk) 09:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, I guess I've had my account on enwiki for a couple of years, but started using it this year (see this). Have fun! - tholly --Turnip-- 09:40, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're too quick! Queen's Park FC changing the link to a ref. I noticed it, but there was an edit conflict when I tried to fix it. Our code was exactly the same :P Kennedy (talk) 09:56, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great minds think alike! - tholly --Turnip-- 11:45, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, This diff - You added back the image. It cant be used as its not free. It looks messy now I agree but it cant be used. Regards, Grant Kennedy (talk) 13:02, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm... Not quite sure how I managed to do that, - good spot. I think I must have edited an earlier diff by accident. Oops :) - tholly --Turnip-- 13:20, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No probs. Just making sure you knew about non-free images :) Kennedy (talk) 13:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Cats

oops... I normally do add categories it's just I was trying to sort out the Solar System Navbox which had so many red links and I got caught up in a rush, sorry. The Flying Spaghetti Monster! 15:34, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, just as long as you're trying to remember! - tholly --Turnip-- 15:37, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"When you create new article, please try and add at least one category" <- Actually, that is not really good advice. If the user does not have a general idea of which cats it should go it, it is better to either mark it {{uncat}} or leave it blank. That way people who tend to focus on cats more can find it faster (Category:Category needed or Special:Uncategorizedpages). By placing just one cat on it, the article could go days, months or even years without being detected. Reminding them to use {{uncat}} is usualy the best advice. -- Creol(talk) 11:23, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right, that all makes sense. I'll bear that in mind for the future, thanks. - tholly --Turnip-- 17:45, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Movie

When your bot changed Film criticism to say movie instead of film, it also needed to "move" the page accordingly, i.e. to Movie criticism. Same with Alien (film).... The Rambling Man (talk) 19:11, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my internet died, hence my complete stopping. It's back now, but very slow. *sigh* - tholly --Turnip-- 21:27, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you don't mind my rewrite of this article because of the fact that I need to make sure that each one of the county articles for the counties in Romania have as much information as it possibly can so that I can get Romania up to VGA status. I also rewrote it to make it look like the other county pages that I have created myself. If you disagree with this rewrite, feel free to respond to my move by telling me what you think I should have done differently on my talk page. If it is about the removal of some of the content, the reason for that is because it was a bit too technical for what my goals are with Romania currently. Feel free to re-add back in some of the material that you created the article with, but please make sure to leave what I added to the article there because it is important information :) Cheers, Razorflame 01:38, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I put it there quickly because it was a most wanted. Making it look like the other articles is good, well done. - tholly --Turnip-- 07:49, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Side note

As a side note, I know that you are quite new to the Simple English Wikipedia, and other editors on this site know that I am the person who is writing all of the Romanian Rivers articles on here and they know not to help me out because I like working at my own pace, but since you are quite new to this site, I would just like to ask if you could please allow me to work at my own pace creating the Romanian River articles. It is a project that I have started working on back in March or so of this year, and I am still working on it, so if you could please allow me to work on it at my own pace and not create any Romanian River articles, that would be much appreciated. Thank you for understanding. Cheers, Razorflame 19:13, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I didn't know, but I'll try and remember that now. thanks, - tholly --Turnip-- 16:02, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template

You might need help with the Template you created. You need to specify details such as the size, position, and format of the picture before you put up a picture. You may want to read Help:How to use images. Minor Contributer (talk) 12:41, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's fine. The template is not meant to include a link for the picture, as this is included in {{flagicon}} and {{country_flagicon}}. I was adding other countries, but many already exist, so please don't change them. Thanks, - tholly --Turnip-- 12:44, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No wonder! Oh, I'm so sorry. Sorry! Minor Contributer (talk) 12:46, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, I'm not attacking you - the template had me stumped for a while too :) - tholly --Turnip-- 12:48, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Minor Contributer (talk) 12:50, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey.

I was wondering if there are any backlog categories like there are on en.wp like orphaned/cleanup/"translation" needed/etc. because I haven't been able to find any. Thanks, Ziggy Sawdust 19:18, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try this one: Category:All orphaned articles, or this one: Wikipedia:Most wanted articles, and at the top of recent changes page there is a "Translation of the week" section. This help? - tholly --Turnip-- 19:22, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Ziggy Sawdust 19:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You could also look at Category:Cleanup needed, Category:Articles that need to be wikified, Category:Articles lacking sources and Category:Complex pages. i was going to create that cat...yes, I'm a bit slow on the uptake. Can you undo your removals of the category? Cassandra talk 20:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, Sorry! Do you want the other two director ones, although there was only one page in those two.- tholly --Turnip-- 20:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, would you? On a related note: it's a lot easier to check en's category system and create the cat with the interwikis than it is to remove them. Cassandra talk 20:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - tholly --Turnip-- 21:00, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

QD

I noticed your QD tag, I will first remove it, and I will explain later. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:10, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have told this editor to consider first, but he seems keen to do it. I thought it ridiculous too, but he seems keen. You cannot put up a QD tag right away; its not complete vandalism, a RfD tag is more appropriate. Let's wait for some other editors to notice this before we start our discussion. I wanted to bring it up too, you know. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well let's first {{qd}} the current page, and re create with capitals on English, Simple, and Wikipedia. OK? - tholly --Turnip-- 10:15, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a QD tag on the page, it will prompt an admin to delete it right away. You can see our discussion here, and here. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:20, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen them, but I'm still {{qd}}ing the originals as I've moved them to a better name with capitals. I won't AfD that for at least 24 hours per your talk page. - tholly --Turnip-- 10:22, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that settles it. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:24, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your back

Hey your back from holiday! Been an eventful week.. I applied for admin and closed it after one day, (I was being stupid in retrospect) and Andrew from NC went on a sockpuppet vandalism spree. Oh yeah and there was a big argument about denoting inactive admins. F S M 15:29, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ooo, another argument... I've just read a little on the stuff on Andrew from NC's talk page and some of the de-admining stuff. Bad luck with the RfA, take into account what was said though :). Seems it has been eventful week then. Thanks, - tholly --Talk-- 15:48, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doing many changes with AWB

Hello Tholly, If you do many changes with AWB can you use your bot account, please? (so that they don't show up in the new changes?) ;) Thanks. --Eptalon (talk) 11:58, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I was meant to do typo fixing with this account, and everything else with the bot. Should I do typos with the bot too? (I know that a couple of changes today had no typos in though - I'll skip them in future) Thanks, - tholly --Talk-- 12:00, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not saying that you should use this account for regular edits, and the bot account for bot edits. I am trying to say: Using certain options it is possible to hide "bot edits". That means if you are likely doing a large number of edits which are only very small changes (like typo fixing) and you do trhese with the bot account, the "new changes" will possibly not look as cluttered. Of course if we are talking about less than 20-30 such edits, its not even worth talking about. --Eptalon (talk) 12:07, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll use the bot account in future. Thanks, - tholly --Talk-- 12:10, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot

Hello, your bot made an edit to the SPL article: here - Any ideas what happened? It said it was adding the stub template, but only removed a spare line? Grant Kennedy (talk) 19:28, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm, looks odd, it's not meant to do that. At least it didn't cause any damage - it has made one or two dodgy edits before! The only thing I can say is, now the software appears to have stopped working - I can't edit commands, and on top of that it can't access the server. That could just be something to do with it. I'm working on it...       Thanks for the heads up :-) - tholly --Talk-- 19:34, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, as you say, no harm done :) Kennedy (talk) 20:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I found one of the problems - the computer was making a cache of every page my bot edited. Basically, the program just gave up as it had far too many cached pages, and was refusing to load any more (hence the "can't access server"). It made the odd edit and I couldn't edit commands because the XML settings file had corrupted (so I lost all my settings and it started some pointless edits like the one you saw that it should have skipped), but I'm not really sure why. I just need to remember to keep an eye on the cache in future. - tholly --Talk-- 12:41, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I knew it. I knew I hadn't added the {{SPL}} template to some of those pages. Thanks for the help :P Kennedy (talk) 20:34, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry - I didn't think of looking to IMDb. Shall I put them back, or do you have the refs? Just need to make sure the "Fuck" link doesn't just point to fuck this time... Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 18:19, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RyanCross' RfA thanks

Hello. I thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was closed as successful. I am honored and thankful for the trust you have in me and for the new position you have helped place me in as an administrator. I will do my very best as an administrator for Simple English Wikipedia, and I promise I'll do all I can to the best of my abilities. If you need any help at all or if you need my assistance, feel free to drop a message on my talk page. I'll see if I can be of help. Again, thank you. I appreciate it very much.

I'd like to invite you to join the newly-formed Rock music WikiProject. There's alot of Rock-related articles on Wikipedia that could use a little attention, and I hope this project can help organize an effort to improve them. So please, take a look and if you like what you see, help us get this project off the ground and a few Rock music pages into the front ranks of Wikipedia articles. Okay but all the other wikipedia versions have this image Replace this image male.svg, shouldn't someone upload it? --Fell on Black Days (talk) 15:16, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We don't allow image uploads here, a blank slot is fine, unless you can find something on commons. - tholly --Talk-- 15:17, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

can't you upload the picture to commons and an it to simple wikipedia? --Fell on Black Days (talk) 15:26, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If the image is on commons, you can use it here, so yes. But we don't upload here. - tholly --Talk-- 15:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What are you talking about can't upload here, you can upload the picture on commons and get it here can't you? --Fell on Black Days (talk) 15:32, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can get it here, but it is still on commons. Just typing the name defaults to commons because we have very few images here. So look for an image on commons, and then use it as if it were here. - tholly --Talk-- 15:34, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks replaced the images with Replace this image male.png and do you know anyone who is interessted in joining the Rock music project? --Fell on Black Days (talk) 15:55, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well done, that looks better. I don't really know about the wikiproject. I just prefer editing whichever pages I feel like. Try the users listed here. - tholly --Talk-- 18:51, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry.

I would like to apologise for yesterday on #wikipedia-simple. I feel that I have abused the community's trust in me. After all, had I not sent him the link to IRC, he would not be able to attack you and others on the channel. Although I knew that he disliked Wikipedia, I felt that, if he met the people that were behind Wikipedia, he would prehaps stop taking the mickey out of me editing Wikipedia, as he would know that all we are trying to do is do something amazing -- giving away a free encyclopaedia. I should have known that prehaps he would get offensive, and maybe I erred on giving him the link to Simple English Wikipedia's IRC channel. Sorry, and please forgive me. If you have any suggestions on what I should do next, please say so. Yours, Microchip  talk 12:28, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thollybot

Hi I was wondering if you could help me make my own bot I noticed that yours uses AWB and thats what I wanted mine to do. Anyways if you could that would be great, if not just say so. Thanks --CPacker (talk) 20:44, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, my bot does use some AWB. With this it can correct small spelling errors (manual) and can do category addition/removal/replacement, disambigging links, and other find/replace type tasks. What do you want to use you bot for? AWB is great for site maintainance, but not for more complex things. To use AWB you need to create your bot's account. Then request AWB for your bot from an admin (some don't yet know how do to it, I know Creol does for sure though). When you've been granted access you can download the bot from a link on the enwiki page. Then login as your bot - you won't be able to used it with any accounts that havn't been approved. the program's pretty self explainatry, and you can read more about it on enwiki too. When it's all working fine and you've sorted the edit summaries (eg: Robot: <<what it's doing>>) you can apply for bot status here. NB. when you have a one bot account, you can get it approved for other bot scripts too (ie. interwikis), not just AWB.
Hope this helps :-) - tholly --Talk-- 14:59, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bad usernames who request an unblock

Hey there, Tholly. I've unblocked AN OLD MAN ON CRACK (talk · contribs) so the user can request a name change at Wikipedia:Changing username. It says on the block template, "Type {{unblock|reason}} on your Talk:User talk page which you should still be able to change – you want to change your username, so say that. If an admin thinks that you should be unblocked, he or she will do so for you, normally for 24 hours." This means the account should be unblocked to request for a name change at Wikipedia:Changing username, but the account should be blocked in the next 24 hours. So instead of declining the request like you did, I've unblocked. Just thought I'd let you know. Thanks, – RyanCross (talk) 08:53, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The movie does exist, but the page was mainly nonsense - extract: "all the geeks happy but they create a black hole and thay have to fix it alot more happens but i don't want to spoil it for you.''' == (there is a kiss at the end) ==" It might be trying to tell you the story, but I went for nonsense because it didn't really make any sense. You're right, it wasn't a complete copy of the enwiki article, sorry, I should have chosen a better reason. Hi Tholly
I was accused before cause of my user name in English, French, encyclopedias, but I select the name as putty is related to computer security, the field I mostly like, and I think that putty source code is a good reference for peoples interested with computer security, but I’m not related to the PuTTY product by any mean, though I wish to take this owner
I’ll try to simplify as much as I can Puttyschool (talk) 12:59, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pete Ham article

A friend of mine is trying to organize the Pete Ham article on Simple Wikipedia. I am not a member of this Wiki version, but my screen name on Wikipedia is ZincOrbie and I have been an editor of Badfinger and Pete Ham for a number of years there. The problem my friend is experiencing is bots are reverting his edits - possibly because he is changing too much in one edit or he is making the article too long. Can you let him know what the probolem is? He is 24.6.251.83. Thanks

The reason he was reverted here by me was that I did a check on one section and found that it was basically an enwiki copy/paste. One or two bits had been changed and there was some other things, but some refs (eg. "[1]") had also been left in which definitely suggested a copy/paste from somewhere. He/she also removed the categories and interwiki links from the bottom of the page. This is something that would almost never be done deliberately.
You may want to create an account on the wiki, or create an SUL (details) so that you can login to every Wikimedia project. This will make it easier for other editors to contact you. Please also remember to sign your posts using four tides: ~~~~, which adds a timestamp and signature to your posts. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 20:21, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. My friend informs me he has made an account, and I am sure he will take your comments to heart. Hmmm, I didn't know the four tildes worked without logging in. Learn something new every day. 66.139.99.43 (talk) 21:12, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
These changes are the basic and accurate facts of Pete Ham. Much of the previous listing was not relevant to a encyclopedia listing on his life and legacy.I followed the guidelines of Simple Wikipedia. I wrote a book on Badfinger and the references are available on the internet, as the entire book is viewable through Google Books since it is out-of-print for the time-being.CalUpswing (talk) 17:39, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I've reverted the edit again as it contains what looks like copied refs: "[1]". I can see there has been some simplifying from enwiki, so please find the appropriate refs, perhaps simplify more, and then re-add the information. Many thanks - tholly --Talk-- 18:09, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is copied only from the simplified info I wrote before - when I wasn't signed in as a registered Simple Wiki person yet. The goal of Simple Wiki is to be accurate and helpful to the public. I wrote a definitive book on the band and have been studying them for thirty years. The references I put are are from the internet as the book is on the internet now. You can't point to the actual page of the book; it is a scroll of all pages. The book is verified as accurate info. See the book's webpage. See the Amazon page. The Simple Wiki page you keep putting back up has some irrelevant information on it and it is unfocused and poorly representative of Pete Ham - which is a disservice to the public. If you have an argument against any specific sentence or paragraph give me the reason and the proof of it.CalUpswing (talk) 23:19, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, but you have not put in the book as a reference. If put in the reference properly, it would look more like "...mostly be Pete[1]", instead of being "...mostly by Pete.[1]" which just looks copy/pasted. A proper ref has a link to the reference section below too, see Template:Citation or Template:Cite book. To add refs, you need to use <ref> tags. For the first reference (I see you've got one) you use <ref name="Ref01>reference</ref> And if the same reference is used again, use: <ref name="Ref01" />. You will also need to add a references section at the bottom of the page: "==References==" and then on a new line "{{reflist}}" To read more go to en:Wikipedia:Citing sources. Thanks - tholly --Talk--

Global unblock

Just for reference - this is the IP you disabled the global block on. 25 confirmed socks, 4 suspected. While our activity with the school has thankfully been minor for the most part and none since the fall terms started up, the user is still actively causing disruption across multiple wikis. With the unblock, we realy need to keep a close eye on all actions from the school to prevent us joining the fun. -- Creol(talk) 16:42, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was not aware of that, thanks. However, I would have unblocked it anyway - it was unblocked due to a user request on IRC, and then re-blocked locally with account creation disabled. I think this should be OK, as the Chris19910 will not even know it is unblocked yet and might not realise. It was to allow the user in question to edit/login from school. Eptalon knew about the discussion, and said it would be OK, though he also might not have realised it was an IP of this user. - tholly --Talk-- 16:57, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you're right - it's better to have articles with no capitals (except for the first word & brand names etc.) It is good to redirect them though, so that if you type in the wrong name (like you did) it just sends you to the right page. to redirect (if you don't already know) you type: "#REDIRECT [[Page title]]" - with the title of the page you're riedirecting to in the brackets. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 20:11, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry another same mistake, please redirect this article Cryptographic to Cryptography then delete, I created Cryptographic then I found Cryptography already exist, so I merged both in Cryptography. Best Regards --Puttyschool (talk) 13:33, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed your online so I'm going to ask you for a favour. You couldn't find a hook for the next DYK update please, as it hasn't been update for two or three days and I plan on updating it soon.  'Done'! - - tholly --Talk-- 16:01, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Beat me to it! I've copied this from the EnWP but I'm not sure how much detail to bring over; most of the links don't go anywhere, and I'm assuming it's better to be short than long. I'm also not sure how to simplify it; is there a SE spell-checker somewhere, to show which words need looking at, or do I just plough through the BE word-list? Any advice is welcome! Xyl 54 (talk) 13:46, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, to make it simple just user shorter sentences, without confusing or ambiguous words. look at some of our very good articles for ideas. Smaller sections without any unnecessary detail or unusual technical terms helps simplify. Don't worry too much about redlinks for now - don't take them all out. When you have finished editing the article, you can take off the {{inuse}} tag, and other people might have a go at simplifying too. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 13:50, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Embedded system

Can you please take a look @ this article Embedded system, It is one of the highly rated articles in all Wikipedias, I did my best to include all important sections, more shrinking will decrease value! but still needs simplifications, can you please take a round, I'll be online agian @ 1:00PM GMT, Good Luck Puttyschool (talk) 22:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tholly

Is it possible to make a link to redirect Exclusive or to Exclusive disjunction? BR Puttyschool (talk) 13:40, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. In future, write #REDIRECT [[Exclusive disjunction]]. --Gwib -(talk)- 13:53, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tholly,

I request that these pages and cats are restored. I am now begining a push on tram articles and Derbyshire articles and by this time tommorrow there will be few, if any, red links.

Thanks,

BG7even 22:25, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The "See also" section is for links to pages which already exist for further reference, so these should be deleted until the articles are created. If you create the article, than you can put the link back in. Don't say "I'm going to", just wait until you do. And the point of categories is to group similar articles together so they can be found easily. Having a page in a cat with no other pages in, and the cat has no parent cats, is of no use. Especially cats that are very specific, because this wiki doesn't yet get enough pages to fill them. Then it means that in Cat A, instead on having Page B inside it, you have Cat B there with only Page B in it - this is pointless and takes longer to look for pages. Again, wait until you create more articles about tram museums in Derbyshire or whatever before making and adding the cat to the page. Simplewiki is not just a copy of enwiki, it does not need exactly the same cats, especially when they aren't enough articles to fit. You've now reverted both me and Gwib on this - both admins - who probably know what they are doing, so please leave the links and cats out unless you do make all these other pages. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 15:57, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Meh. Whatever. IDC anymore. I was welcomed at Wikipedia, but left due to all teh dramaz that had effected me. I hoped I could be useful here, but it seems all my ideas are not wanted. There's no need to lecture me on us not being en-wp - look over my comments at various discussions... I have always said don't bring en here.
Secondly, adminship means nothing. All they have is a bunch of extra buttons to maintain the wiki - nothing more. If i'd reverted another user, would you be saying the same thing?
Thanks,
BG7even 18:16, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry that you feel you have to leave, as you've made many good contributions here. I also accept that you have stated in DYK discussions that you don't want en over here. As this is the case, I'm sure that you'll agree not so many cats are needed. And finally, sorry about the confusion over "admins". You are right - being an admin doesn't make you special - but it does suggest that you are a trusted user (along with many other non-admins). It was more the point that you had reverted trusted users that I was making. If one of the users you'd reverted was not an admin, but was a someone who I thought was a trusted user, I would have written as such. I just typed admins as it was quicker and I thought you'd realise I what I meant. Sorry if you thought I meant otherwise, and please do continue to write more tram related articles. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 18:36, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I hope not. I really feel I can give a lot to this project. And I'm sorry as well - I overacted and was in fact getting a bit owny! :( I do agree in hindsight that not all the cats are needed - most can be merged together ;). I've just decided that my next project is global categorisation as well ;). Do stop me if it gets to complicated! I knew what you meant about admins, I was just in a mood at the time and went OTT. Again apologies. *sigh* I hope my contributions outweigh my "discussions" if/when I go for an RfA! Thanks, BG7even 20:33, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's good your "back" :). I guess I was a bit frustrated in my first post too which is why I responded rather firmly. Good luck with your global categorisation project! We have problems with many pages with uncatted and they also don't have {{uncat}} making them hard to find. Generally I think that keeping the number of cats to a minimum is good, for the reasons above. You also don't want to many cats on a page (like some enwiki ones) as then it's hard to find a certain cat... confusing. Anyway, have fun :) - tholly --Talk-- 16:32, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AWB checkpage

Hi, I messaged Gwib about this about 12 hours ago or so, but it appears he went offline after sending me the welcome message, hence, I quote the message I sent him:-

[...] I was wondering, I noticed you were an admin - could you add me to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage, please, or does this require more stuff on the SEWP side of things? I am already accepted and on the checkpage on en, I just don't know if there are different criteria here. Thanks! :) neuro(talk) 06:31, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for reading, have a nice day. :) neuro(talk) 17:14, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neuro. Basically, our criterea is the same as en's, and we have similar rules too. On the en registration page it says: "As a general rule, only users with more than 500 mainspace edits will be registered.". Although I think users are given the tool if they have fewer edits here, you are a new user on simple (registered just over a month ago, but started editing today) and have only 10 mainspace edits. Therefore I'm afraid I don't think it's a wise idea to give you the tool, sorry. If you stay around and edit here, I'm sure you'll be able to have the tool in the future, especially if you already use it on en. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 18:52, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, just thought I would check whether en blurred into here. Cheers for replying, neuro(talk) 19:11, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of pages created by me

Hi Tholly, I've seen on IRC that you have been deleting articles I've created because they're from en wikipedia. I just want you to know that I not the only one doing this. Synergy may have created pages too from there. I just took out some parts because it's not simple english. Could you stop deleting my articles please, and if not, what's your reason. Thanks. Techman224Talk 17:15, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, they were just copied from en. On some of them, they had just had section taken out (like "History" etc). The cats had not been modified (they were red), the interwikis had not been modified (no enwiki links one), and no simplifying on the section there. They did not say much, and people can go to en to see the same info (and more!), with proper formatting. That's why. - tholly --Talk-- 17:29, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You shouldn't have...

...done this without asking me why I did it. It was full protected for a good reason. Synergy 19:52, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It appeared to be protected because of vandalsims by Rhodes416, who is now blocked. I unblocked it because I was under the impression that we kept the mainpage unprotected (just autoconfirmed) as much as possible here. I didn't realise that other administrators now think otherwise - tholly --Talk-- 21:54, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because they were direct copies from the English Wikipedia with little or no effort to simplify them. Juliancolton (talk) 17:19, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. Thanks Julian, and sorry for the late reply. - tholly --Talk-- 21:54, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

C.V.Stanford

Hello Tholly, I am surprised that you deleted my article on Stanford, and even more surprised that you should do so without consulting me. I have taken another look at what I have written, made a few simplifications and restored it. If you have any further suggestions by all means let me know, but it is as simple as it can be made, and no more complex than anything else I have written for Simple Wikipedia. There is nothing wrong with basing a Simple Wiki article on the Wikipedia article. I did also consult Groves Dictionary, which was probably referred to already by the writer(s) of the Wiki page. Thanks Hikitsurisan (talk) 22:34, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that, I've had another look and you're right - it's OK. I can't have been thinking properly. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 21:54, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am taking a semi-wikibreak for the Christmas period, as in real life I am very busy and have quite a big issue with my computer (CPU has died...). As a result, I may not respond swiftly to queries.
I hope to be back again sometime in January.
