The United States presidential election of 1852 was the 17th presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 2, 1852. The United States holds presidential elections every four years. Franklin Pierce was elected president.[1]

Candidates[change | change source]

General Winfield Scott

Millard Fillmore was the incumbent president, having replaced Zachary Taylor, the 1848 winner, on his death in 1850. Fillmore belonged to the Whig Party. Instead of choosing Fillmore as a candidate for 1852, the Whigs chose General Winfield Scott. William Alexander Graham was Scott's running mate, the person who would become vice-president if elected.

The Democratic Party selected Franklin Pierce. Pierce was not a well known politician. William R. King was Pierce's running mate.
