The 186th New York Infantry Regiment was a regiment of the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was created on September 5, 1864 in Sackets Harbor. The regiment was mustered out on June 2, 1865. The colonel was Bradley Winslow.

The companies of the regiment were mustered in from September 5, 1864, to September 29, 1864. The soldiers in the regiment were some of the first soldiers to get inside of enemy fortifications in the Siege of Petersburg on April 2, 1865, and it helped to capture Fort Mahone.[1] The regiment fought in the Battle of Boydton Plank Road from October 27, 1864 to October 28, 1864. The regiment fought in the Battle of Fort Stedman on March 25, 1865. The regiment fought in the Appomattox Campaign from March 28, 1865 to April 9, 1865. The regiment was mustered out on June 2, 1865.[2][3] When the regiment was discharged, the soldiers were recruited to the 79th New York Infantry Regiment.[3]

There were 10 companies of the 186th New York Infantry Regiment:[4]

  • Companies A and B were mustered in at Sackets Harbor on September 5, 1864,
  • Companies C and D were mustered in on September 7, 1864,
  • Companies E and F were mustered in on September 8, 1864,
  • Company H was mustered in on September 10, 1864,
  • Company I was mustered in on September 21, 1864,
  • Company G was mustered in at Hart's Island on September 26, 1864,
  • Company K was mustered in on September 29, 1864

The colonel was Bradley Winslow. The Lieutenant Colonel was E. Jay Marsh. The Major was Abraham D. Sternberg.[3]
