Adyar, Chennai

Adyar is a large neighbourhood (locality) in the southern part of Chennai Metropolitan city, Tamil Nadu. This neighbourhood is on the southern banks of Adyar River. Adyar is one of the most expensive areas in Chennai. The land property in Adyar costs four times as much as similar land properties in the northern part of Chennai.[1]

The Adyar River forms an estuary near the coast of Adyar (locality). This has been home to more than one hundred species of birds.[2] But this estuary has been affected by industrial wastes.[3]

Adyar is home to Adyar Cancer Institute and Central Leather Research Institute. Central Leather Research Institute is the world's largest leather research institute.[4] IIT Madras, Anna University, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Asian College of Journalism and the Technical Teachers Training Institute are all located in this neighbourhood.
