On 22 June 2025, the United States Navy and Air Force attacked three Iranian nuclear sites ordered by US President Donald Trump under the code name Operation Midnight Hammer.[2][3] The attack was conducted by Northrop B‐2 Spirit airplanes.[4][1] This officially marked the United States’ entry into the war with the State of Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a part of the Iran–Israel war.[5]

Following the strikes, President Donald Trump tweeted on Truth Social with the following message threatening Iran if they dare to retaliate:

ANY RETALIATION BY IRAN AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL BE MET WITH FORCE FAR GREATER THAN WHAT WAS WITNESSED TONIGHT.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes as a "reckless violation of the UN Charter and international law" and stated that "Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people."[6][7] The day later Iran launched an attack on US military base in Qatar.

The Iran-backed military organization and movements Houthis said that it had cancelled the ceasefire that it made with the United States in May in response of President Trump's attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.[8][9]
