Presidency
[change | change source]On 8 August 2026, the Tisza Party nominated Baka to be elected by the National Assembly to be the new President of Hungary. Parliamentary members of the party picked him as their nominee from among other candidates on a shortlist in a vote held by secret ballot.[1] This came after Prime Minister Péter Magyar's original candidate for president, Judit Polgár, said she did not want to be president. Baka is a political independent and is not a member of the any party.[2] Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony supported Baka's nomination.[3]
On 11 August 2026, Baka was elected Hungary’s ninth president by the governing Tisza Party’s supermajority.[4] His term began on 19 August 2026.[5]
