Angus Taylor (born 30 September 1966) is an Australian politician who has been the leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Liberal Party since 2026. He has been a member of the House of Representatives, since 2013 representing the seat of Hume. He was the shadow treasurer under Peter Dutton from 2022 until 2025. Taylor is a member of the National Right faction of the Liberal Party.[1][2]
Taylor unsuccessfully ran for the Liberal Party leadership in 2025, following Peter Dutton's loss in the 2025 election.[3][4][5] He lost the election in May 2025 to Deputy Leader Sussan Ley.[6]
Leader of the Opposition
[change | change source]Taylor resigned from Sussan Ley's shadow cabinet in February 2026 because of low polling numbers for the Liberal Party. He successfully challenged Ley in a leadership spill, becoming the leader of the Liberal Party and the leader of the Opposition.[7]
Notes
[change | change source]- ↑ The position of "Deputy Leader in the House of Representatives" is held by Hastie. As Hume is a member of the Senate, it was necessary to elect a House-only deputy for procedural reasons.
