The Aralkum Desert has sparse vegetation, mostly consisting of salt and drought tolerant shrubs and plants (eg.stipa, black saxahul). Some parts of the Aralkum have salt crusts. These plants are found along the higher, less saline areas. In many places, the Aralkum is totally barren.
