On 12 July 2019, al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on the Asasey hotel in Kismayo, Somalia.

Two notable journalists were killed in the attack including a Somali Canadian, Hodan Nalayeh.[1][2][3][4] Three Kenyans, three Tanzanians, two Americans and a Briton were also killed in the attack.[5]
