Atonement is a 2007 British romantic drama war movie. It is set in the 1930s and 1940s. It was directed by Joe Wright. It is based on 2001 novel Atonement by Ian McEwan. It stars James McAvoy as Robbie Turner and Keira Knightley as Cecilia Tallis. Her younger sister Briony Tallis is played by Saoirse Ronan at age 13, Romola Garai at age 18 and Vanessa Redgrave at age 77.

In the 1930s, a young girl named Briony Tallis wrongly accuses Robbie, the son of her family's servant, of a crime he did not commit. This lie destroys the budding romance between Robbie and Briony's sister, Cecilia, and Robbie is sent to prison. Years later, during World War II, Robbie is released to fight as a soldier in France, while Cecilia works as a nurse and waits for him. Briony, now an adult and feeling very guilty, also becomes a nurse and tries to find a way to apologize and fix the lives she ruined. At the end of the story, an elderly Briony reveals that Robbie and Cecilia actually died during the war and never saw each other again. She explains that she wrote a book giving them a happy ending as a way to find "atonement," or forgiveness, for her childhood mistake.
