Samangan (previous: Eukratidia; then Aybak or Aibak)[1] is the capital of Samangan Province in the northern part of Afghanistan. It was a major Buddhist centre during the 4th and 5th centuries.[2]

The town is on the banks of the Khulm River valley below the Hindu Kush Mountains.
