Birdsville

Birdsville is a small town in the state of Queensland, Australia. It is in the Shire of Diamantina, in the western part of the state, close to the border with South Australia. Birdsville is known for being very remote and for its hot, dry climate.

As of the 2021 census, about 110 people live in Birdsville. The town is small, but it receives many visitors during special events.

Birdsville was originally a place where Aboriginal people lived. The town was later used as a stop for moving cattle. It became an important place for trade and rest during cattle drives in the 1800s. The town's name may come from the many birds found in the area.

Birdsville has a desert climate. It is usually very hot and dry, especially in summer. Temperatures can go over 40°C (104°F). Rain is rare, but when it comes, it can cause flooding.

  • Big Red – A large sand dune near Birdsville. It is a famous spot for visitors.

Transport

Birdsville is very remote. There are unsealed roads connecting it to other towns. During heavy rain, the roads can become closed. Birdsville has a small airport, and some flights connect it to other parts of Queensland.
