Bushong is a city in Lyon County, Kansas, United States. In 2020, 27 people lived there.[4]

The city was a whistle-stop of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It was first named Weeks. The city changed its name to Bushong in 1886. It was named after St. Louis Browns catcher Albert J. "Doc" Bushong. After the Browns' victory in the 1886 World Series over the Chicago White Stockings, the Missouri Pacific Railroad named some of their depots after the some of the St. Louis Browns players. The city of Bushong is the only one still carrying its name from the 1886 World Series.[5]

During the Cold War, Bushong was the where one of the first kinds of nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles. The place was active from 1961–1965. It was part of the 548th Strategic Missile Squadron.[6]

Bushong is at 38°38′34″N 96°15′24″W / 38.64278°N 96.25667°W / 38.64278; -96.25667 (38.6428, -96.256735). The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2). All of it is land.[3]

2020 census[change | change source]

The 2020 census says that there were 27 people, 16 households, and 12 families living in Bushong.

The median age was 54.8 years. Of the people, 92.6% were White and 7.4% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.1% of the people.[4][7]

The 2010 census says that there were 34 people, 12 households, and 10 families living in Bushong.[8]
