Dewa Ayu Carma Citrawati[1] is an Indonesian writer, a Balinese literature activist, and a Wikimedian. Born on February 24, 1990,[2] she is a pioneer in digitizing and translating ancient Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. She writes short stories and poems in the Balinese language. Her second anthology, Kutang Sayang Gemel Madui, won the Rancage Literary Award in 2017.[3][4] In 2019, she began her involvement with Wikimedia and developed WikiPustaka, an online library for Balinese language sources. For her work, she was awarded Wikimedian Newcomer of the Year in 2021.[5][6]
Personal life
[change | change source]Citrawati went to SMA Negeri 1 Banjarangkan for her high school. She then graduated from the Department of Language and Literature of Bali at Udayana University. She also earned her master's degree from the university's Department of Pure Linguistics.[7] From 2011 to 2018, she worked as a Balinese language teacher.[2]
Writing and Activism
[change | change source]From a young age, Carma was very interested in the Balinese language. She saw that it was in danger of being lost, so she began researching its history. She writes short stories and poems in Balinese. In 2014, she wrote her first short story book, Smara Reka, with her husband. Her second book, Kutang Sayang Gemel Madui, has 13 short stories about social problems and won the Rancage Literary Award in 2017.[3][4] In 2018, she was a speaker at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.[2]
