Category:CS1 maint: url-status
- This category is hidden on its member pages—unless the corresponding user preference (Appearance → Show hidden categories) is set.
- These categories are used to track, build and organize lists of pages needing "attention en masse" (for example, pages using deprecated syntax), or that may need to be edited at someone's earliest convenience.
- These categories also serve to aggregate members of several lists or subcategories into a larger, more efficient list (discriminated by classifications).
- Typically, tracking categories are automatically populated by templates invoked in pages or by the MediaWiki software (see Special:TrackingCategories for an overview of the latter).
This category may be empty occasionally or even most of the time.

This is a tracking category for CS1 citations that use |url-status= with a proper assigned value when |archive-url= is empty or omitted. While not an error, cs1|2 templates that have |url-status= but not |archive-url= should be repaired. To repair, if the value is live, remove |url-status=. Otherwise, replace the citation or add |archive-url= and |archive-date=.
Generally speaking, |url-status= is only used when there is an archive. If there is no |archive-url=, this tag should not be used. This tag defines how the reference is displayed.
The basic options are:
- live = the original URL is valid. (why was the archive url even needed..) This is rarely needed unless an archive url has been added while the original url is still valid.
- dead = The original URL is similar to a 404 page not found error. Most archived URLs are used for this case.
- usurped = The original URL was taken over by something entirely different. Think spam or porn. The system will not display the original URL as it serves no use anymore. It will still display an error though.
- bot: unknown = If are not a bot, never use this. It is for when a bot cannot tell the status and needs someone to look at the original URL and make the decision. Take a quick look at the site and change this to the correct value. (either live or dead will clear the error)
Pages in this category should only be added by Module:Citation/CS1.
By default, Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2 error messages are visible to all readers and maintenance category messages are hidden from all readers.
To display maintenance messages, include the following text in your common CSS page or your specific skin's CSS page (common.css and skin.css respectively):
.mw-parser-output span.cs1-maint {display: inline;} /* display Citation Style 1 maintenance messages */
To display hidden-by-default error messages:
.mw-parser-output span.cs1-hidden-error {display: inline;} /* display hidden Citation Style 1 error messages */
Even with this CSS installed, older pages in Wikipedia's cache may not have been updated to show these error messages even though the page is listed in one of the tracking categories. A null edit will resolve that issue.
To hide normally-displayed error messages:
.mw-parser-output span.cs1-visible-error {display: none;} /* hide Citation Style 1 error messages */
You can personalize the display of these messages (such as changing the color), but you will need to ask someone who knows CSS or at WP:Simple talk if you do not understand how.
