Would someone explain the entries in this category?[change source]

I understand that there is probably a hierarchy of what you call the storms (such as a hurricane is more powerful than a tropical storm). What I don't understand is what a location has to do with strength -- every subcategory in this category except Category:Tropical depressions specifies either Atlantic or East Pacific. I'm wondering if this category needs to be redone, or if we have the appropriate entries to put in it at all. Comments? --Auntof6 (talk) 04:13, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My knowledge is more on mainland severe weather, but since they do make landfall I know a little about it. Severity from Low to High: Tropical Depression, Tropical Storm, Hurricane (by Category/Severity level). Depressions are generally numbered, storms & hurricanes are named. Location itself does not really have to do with strengths, but more with naming of them. Atlantic storms/hurricanes are from one group of rotating name lists, Pacific storms/hurricanes are from another, as well are different parts of the world have other naming groups, also other parts of the world call the Hurricanes , Typhoons . So I would say the categories should be Atlantic Hurricanes, then a sub for each category level if a sub is needed, since I doubt the current listing of east pacific hurricanes would have the 3 minimum per category to sub those categories out. But having them by region to me seems to logical, but I am not sure what current practice for the division of this is. Enfcer (talk) 04:37, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
