Chamar

Chamar (derived from Sanskrit term ‘charmakara’ meaning: skin worker) also known by many other names, is an Indian caste group whose hereditary occupation was tanning leather.[1] Chamar community is classified as a Scheduled Caste under modern Indian constitution. The term ‘Chamar’ is regarded as a disrespecting slur and is a punishable offence under the Indian constitution.
