"Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls" is the ninth episode of the second season of the American animated television series South Park. The 20th episode of the series overall, it originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on August 19, 1998. Series co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote the episode with Nancy M. Pimental. Parker directed it.

In this episode, a film festival comes to South Park. The title is a song that Chef writes to sell chocolate candy to film festival visitors.[1]

Plot[change | change source]

A film festival organizer complains that Park City, Utah used to be a nice mountain town, but the yearly film festival has ruined it. He decides to take his film festival to South Park instead. He plans to ruin South Park too and then move on to the next mountain town.[1]

Many film watchers come to South Park for the festival. The magical piece of feces, Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo tells Kyle that the newcomers are killing him. This is because their waste comes from healthy food and not the unhealthy food that South Park residents eat. Kyle tries to warn people about this, but no one believes him. Mr. Hanky almost dies, but he is saved by eating Chef's chocolate candy.[1]

Mr. Hanky gives a speech about the true meaning of film festivals: People watching unusual movies together. The evil organizer almost drowns in sewage.[1]

Critical reception[change | change source]

Phil Dyess-Nugent of The AV Club says that this episode made fun of what the Sundance Film Festival was like in the late 1990s. He says the film festival organizer is meant to be Robert Redford.[1]
