Colton Wyatt Parayko (born May 12, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL) and serves as their alternate captain.
Parayko is a one-time Stanley Cup champion, winning with the Blues in 2019. Internationally, he plays for Canada and won the 4 Nations Face-Off with them in 2925.
Career
[change | change source]Before playing in the NHL, Parayko played three years with the Alaska Nanooks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). He had a successful time with the Nanooks. In 2013, the team named him as the alternate captain.[1] On September 24, 2014, the Nanooks upgraded Parayko and named him as their new captain.[2]
He was drafted 86th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2012 NHL entry draft. On March 10, 2015, Parayko signed a two-year entry-level contract to join the Blues.[3] He was immediately sent down to the Blues AHL-affiliate Chicago Wolves. On October 8, the Blues called Parayko up to the team and he made his NHL debut in a 3–1 win against the Edmonton Oilers.[4] Six days later, on October 14, he scored his first NHL goal against Jonas Hiller, a powerplay goal in the second period with his second career goal coming right after in a 4–3 win against the Calgary Flames.[5] Despite suffering injuries which kept out of action, he still had a great 2015–16 season and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.[6] He helped the Blues during the playoffs, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars. They were defeated by the San Jose Sharks four games to two in the Western Conference final.[7] On June 20, 2017, Parayko signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract to stay with the Blues.[8] He helped the Blues during the playoffs, defeating the Winnipeg Jets, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks. In the Finals, they defeated by the Boston Bruins four games to three to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.[9]
On September 1, 2021, Parayko signed an eight-year, $52 million contract to stay with the Blues.[10]
