Consumption of Tide Pods

Tide Pods are a brand of laundry detergent pod that has been sold by Procter & Gamble (P&G) since 2012. Eating Tide Pods can kill a person. However, children and people with dementia can think that Tide Pods are candy, which is dangerous.

Because of this, Tide Pods were called an emerging health risk by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012. Between 2012 and 2013, over 7,000 cases of young children eating laundry pods were recorded, and six people died after eating laundry pods. To stop this from happening, P&G changed Tide Pod containers to an opaque design, added warning labels, and made the pod taste bitter.

In late December 2017, an Internet meme formed about Tide Pods. This led to the "Tide Pod Challenge", where people ate the pods on purpose.[1] Google and Facebook removed videos about this challenge, and P&G used advertisements to stop people from eating the pods.
