Dakota City is a city in Dakota County, Nebraska, United States. As of the 2020 census, 2,081 people lived there.[2] It is the county seat of Dakota County.[4]

Dakota City was platted in 1856.[5] It was named for the Dakota people.[6] Dakota City was incorporated as a city in 1858.[7]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.20 square miles (3.11 km2). Of that, 1.08 square miles (2.80 km2) is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 km2) is water.[9]

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,919 people, 637 households, and 464 families living in Dakota City.[11]
