Plot
[change | change source]The film opens with a dinosaur egg being separated from its mother's nest during a Carnotaurus attack. After a series of events involving an Oviraptor and a Pteranodon, the egg is accidentally dropped on an island populated by lemurs.
The baby Iguanodon, named Aladar, is raised by the caring lemur Plio and her family, including her father Yar, brother Zini, and daughter Suri.
Years later, while the adult Aladar and his family are attending a lemur mating ritual, a catastrophic meteorite crashes into the ocean. The resulting shockwaves and meteors destroy their island home, forcing Aladar and the surviving lemurs to flee to the mainland. The journey to the Nesting Grounds.
After surviving the desolate, meteor-scorched landscape, Aladar and the lemurs are attacked by Velociraptors. They escape and join a large, multi-species herd of migrating dinosaurs, including a cranky elderly Styracosaurus named Eema, her pet Ankylosaurus Url, and a Brachiosaurus named Baylene.
The herd is led by Kron, a severe and uncaring Iguanodon who follows a strict "survival of the fittest" mentality. Aladar's compassionate nature quickly puts him at odds with Kron, especially when Aladar helps the older and weaker dinosaurs keep up. Water discovery: When the herd arrives at what appears to be a dried-up lake bed, Kron pushes them to keep going, condemning the weaker members. Aladar, realizing there is water buried under the lake bed, teams up with Baylene to dig until they strike the water table, saving the herd from dehydration. This act of kindness earns him the respect of Kron's sister, Neera, who grows closer to him.
The herd is consistently hunted by a pair of massive Carnotaurus. Kron sends his scout, Bruton, ahead to assess the danger. When Bruton returns injured, Kron ruthlessly abandons him and the slower dinosaurs. Bruton is later nursed back to health by Aladar and the lemurs. The path ahead: Aladar and his group discover that Kron is leading the herd to the Nesting Grounds through a dangerous rockslide, which has blocked the safer, traditional entrance. Bruton sacrifices himself to save Aladar and the others from a Carnotaurus, causing a cave-in that traps one of the carnivores.
At the base of the blocked path, Aladar confronts Kron, who attacks him out of jealousy. Neera intervenes and sides with Aladar, and the herd refuses to follow Kron's reckless plan. The remaining Carnotaurus ambushes Kron, and despite Aladar and Neera's rescue attempt, Kron is killed. Aladar then leads the herd in a unified stand against the Carnotaurus, driving it off before it falls to its death.
Aladar leads the surviving dinosaurs through the newly discovered path to the thriving Nesting Grounds.
In the end, Aladar and Neera become mates, and a new generation of dinosaurs is born. The lemurs also find others of their kind. The film closes with a message of hope and new life, with Aladar and Neera raising their family and building a new future for their kind.
