Donetsk People’s Republic is an unrecognised state in the Donbas region of Ukraine. When the War in Donbas started in 2014, a few hundred pro-Russian separatists proclaimed it in part of Donetsk Oblast. Donetsk Oblast is all to the east of Ukraine, at the border with Russia. Approximately at the same time, other people started Luhansk People's Republic in Luhansk Oblast. In both parts, there are many ethnic Russians. Russia aided the start of these non-recognised states.

Prior 2022, the Donetsk People's Republic was not recognised by any UN member state, until in 2022 when Russia officially recognised the state along with the Luhansk People's Republic.
