El Mercurio de Valparaíso is the oldest newspaper of Chile,[1] and the oldest one in the world in Spanish language that is still being published –the first newspaper in Chile was La Aurora de Chile. It is from Valparaíso, and it was founded in 1827 by typographers Thomas G. Wells, Ignacio Silva Medina and Pedro Félix Vicuña. The first edition was published in September 12, 1827.

It is claimed that newspaper El Peruano is the oldest one in Spanish language.[2]
